Obeying God's Will (James 4:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-29-03

My Worship Time                  Focus:  Obeying God’s will

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  James 4:15

            1.  Message of the verse:  “Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and also do this or that.’”  (NASB)

As we look at this subject of obeying the will of God we can look at the life of Jesus and see something that He had to say about it.  In the forth chapter of the gospel of John, Jesus is speaking to the woman at the well about her need for salvation, and while this is happening His disciples went to get Him something to eat and were encouraging Him to eat when He told them "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.”  I believe that as a believer we can relate to this when we are doing the will of God and look at the clock and realize that we have missed lunch because we were so wrapped up in what we were doing.

The will of God for Jesus Christ while He was on this earth was to be offered as a sacrifice for the sins of the world, to fall under the wrath of Almighty God in our place, and yet He said that His food was to do the will of God.  This tells me that doing the will of God in my life will not always be an easy thing to do, and yet by doing it, it will bring honor to God as was in the case of Jesus doing the will of God was.  We will look at other reasons why it is best to do the will of God latter on.

The apostle Paul did not believe that the will of God for his life was a burden, but he knew that it was the key which opened doors and set him free, free to do what he knew was the very best thing he could be doing in his life.

Dr. Wiersbe says that the will of God for our lives can be compared to laws that operate the universe with this exception:  “those laws are general, but the will He has planned for our lives is specifically designed for us.  Not two lives are planned according to the same pattern.”  However there are some things that are common practice in all believers as far as the will of God for their lives.  Please give me some examples of these common areas.  The commandments are areas that the will of God for our lives, but God does not call each of us to do the very same work in our lives, so this is where we see individually in the will of God for each believer.

Do you think that it is of the up most importance to do the will of God with the right attitude?  God’s will for our lives is not cold or impersonal, “for the will of God is a living relationship between god and the believer.  This relationship is not destroyed when the believer disobeys, for the Father still deals with His child, even if He must chasten.”

Dr. Wiersbe gives a good illustration of how to understand the will of God.  See pg. 136, 137.

  1. The Believers relationship with the will of God is a growing experience.

1.      We should know the will of God.

As Paul was speaking of his experience of conversion he said this:  And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear an utterance from His mouth.  (Acts 22:14)

2.         It is not difficult to discover.  John 7:17 “If any man is willing to do His will, he shall     know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself.”

Dr. Wiersbe said, “God does not reveal His will to the curious or the careless, but to those who are ready and willing to obey Him.

3.         We are to be filled with the knowledge of His will.  Col. 1:9-12 “For this reason also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, (the reason why), so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

  1. God wants us to understand His will.  Ephesians 5:17:  “So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

There is a difference in knowing the will of God and understanding the will of God.  In some cases God wants us to know why and not only what.  “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.”  I believe that this is taken in the context of knowing and understanding mysteries, and mysteries when spoken of in the Bible means something that had been hidden before and is now revealed, and because we are the blood bought children of God He has revealed the why of some of the things that He is doing.  For the things we don’t know why about we must exercise faith, and remember Deu. 29:29, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.”   I recommend memorizing this verse, for in our walk with the Lord there are times when we do not always know the “what” and the “why” of all things.

C.     We must also prove God’s will.  Romans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.  “1) to test, examine, prove, scrutinise (to see whether a thing is genuine or not), as metals  2) to recognize as genuine after examination, to approve, deem worthy.”  Greek meaning of the word “prove.”  If we were testing metal, as this could be an application of this Greek word, then it would take some time to do it but when we were finished then we could prove it.  This verse says the we can prove the will of God in our lives, we can, as the definition of the word prove says “see whether a thing is genuine or not.”  (Read pg. 138, first full paragraph).

  1. We must do God’s will from the heart.  Eph. 6:6 “Work hard, but not just to please your masters when they are watching. As slaves of Christ, do the will of God with all your heart.”  Can you think of an OT character who did not do the will of God from their heart, but did the will of God?  What is the difference if you do  it from your heart or not?  Dr. Wiersbe says that we can apply 2Cor. 9:7, which speaks of being a cheerful giver to doing the will of God.  Do you agree with this?  (Read lat paragraph on page 138, and all of page 139).

2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Have a heart that seeks to do the will of God, have a heart that God can work in, not a hard heart that He will not work in.  Remember that there are times when I will fail, so don’t be prideful and not admit when I am wrong and confess my sin to the Lord and then continue to seek to prove what is the will of God for me and do it from my heart.

The Word of God was very challenging to my heart, it was also convicting, and refreshment to my soul.

My Steps of Faith Today: I want to continue to trust the Lord with our investments with Andrew Lech, and seek to know what the Lord has for me to learn from this trial.  (I learned yesterday that in order to worship and serve God it takes a sacrifice, and by tithing from the (extra) money that I invested with Andrew Lech it was not a sacrifice to do so, but it was a token, or it was giving that money so that God would continue to bless me with the other 90%.  I can’t help God, but I need to trust Him so that He will show me what that I can prove that perfect will for my life).

Memory verse for the week:  James 1:5

4.         But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Disobeying God's Will (James 4:17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-27-03

My Worship Time                  Focus:  Disobeying God’s will

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  James 4:17

            1.  Message of the verse:  “Therefore, to one who knows the right thing to do, and does not do it, to him it is sin.”  (NASB)  “Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.”  (NLT)

This section is talking about the will of God, and as the verse uses words like “the right thing” or “good” then it must be said that the will of God is good.  I think of the apostle Paul when he was about to go up to Jerusalem and all of the advice that he got to tell him that trouble was ahead of him, yet he knew in his heart that it was the will of God for him to go.  The question to ask as we have the privilege to look back on this is “was it good for him to go?”  It seems to me that we may be missing part of our Bible if he would not have obeyed God, and Paul would have missed out on a free trip to Rome if he had not obeyed God.

Dr. Wiersbe gives two reasons why we do not obey the will of God.  The first reason is pride, pride that we don’t need any help from anyone.  When I think of pride I think of it as the first sin that entered the universe, for it was the sin of Lucifer.  It is also one of the seven deadly sins that we learned about earlier this year from our brother Chittock.  The second reason for not obeying the will of God is fear or lack of faith, or as Dr. Wiersbe states it “an ignorance of the nature of the will of God.”  The will of God is not an option for believers as the verse states, for if we know His will and do not do it then it is sin.

Many people believe that the will of God for our lives is something to avoid because it will make us miserable, when the opposite is true.  God is our creator, and thus He knows infinitely more that we do so this is where faith and trust come into the picture.

What happens if we don’t obey the will of God in our lives?  Read Hebrews 12:5-11 for the fist part of this answer and for the next part of the answer read 1Corthians 9:27.  The first answer is discipline, and the second answer is we will loose rewards.

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I think of the song that Frank Sinatra sang “I did it my way,” and know that there are far to many times in my life that I do it my way and not God’s way.  This is prideful on my part, and God is not pleased when I am prideful.

The Word of God was challenging to my heart as I read it this morning, and it also convicted me.

My Steps of Faith Today:  As I prepare my Bible Study lesson for Tuesday I trust that the Lord will give me the wisdom to say what He would want me to say to those who are here, and that He will bring those here whom He wants to be here.

Memory verses for the week:  James 1:4-5

4.      And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

5.      But if any of you lacks wisdom, let Him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

The Uncertainty of Life (James 4:14a)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-25-03

My Worship Time                  Focus:  The Uncertainty of Life

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  James 4:14a

1.      Message of the verse:  “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow.”  (NASB)  “How do you know what will happen tomorrow?”  (NLT)

2.      The uncertainty of life (4:14a).    Proverbs 27:1 “Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth.  I do not think that it is wrong to have plans, in fact the Bible teaches us to plan ahead, but the problem comes in when we leave God out of our plans, and even boast about what we are going to accomplish in and of our own strength.  We are to remember that God is in control of all things and that we are to submit our lives to His care, for He knows the beginning from the end, and He has promised us to work all things out for our good and for His glory.

3.      The brevity of life (4:14b).  “For your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.”  (NASB)  “For your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.”   The Bible has much to say about how short life is, and that we cannot be sure of tomorrow.  Our author quoted a number of passages from the book of Job to point this fact out.  He also wrote that it would be better if we would be investing our lives and not just spending our lives.  I we look at life as an investment then we can see that someday when we get to glory that the investment of this life will pay big dividends.  Rick Warren spoke about this in the “Purpose Driven Life” book where he spoke of life on this earth as just a warm up lap compared to what we will spend in eternity, however how we invest our lives here, as said before, determines on how we spend our lives in eternity.

4.      The frailty of man (4:16)  “Otherwise you will be boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.”  (NLT) “We may throw the dice, but the LORD determines how they fall.”  Proverbs 16:33 (NLT) “Man cannot control future events.  He has neither the wisdom to see the future nor the power to control the future.  For him to boast is sin; it is making himself God.”  “Be Mature”  (See quote on pg. 133 and paragraph 1)

2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I have learned or been reminded about life in this passage, and that is that I am not to brag about what I will accomplish in my life on my own, that I must realize that life is short, and that I am frail.  I have learned that I must stay close to my Guide, and that my life is an investment for eternity.

The Word of God was very convicting to my soul as I studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  The trials that I am going through are for certain a tremendous burden to my heart and soul.  I am more perplexed about the trial that our church is going through because I am hurting for my very close friend Bruce Konya and all of his family.  I do not think that what he is going through is right, but I do think that it is a symptom of what is wrong in our church, and that is cynicism, which Dr. Jeremiah says is the opposite of wonder, the wonder of God, and the wonder of worshipping God.

I must continue to ask the Lord to control my anger about all of this and I must continue to ask the Lord to teach me what He wants me to learn through all of this, and I must continue to ask the Lord to search my own heart through all of this.

The Complexity of Life (James 4:13)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-24-03

My Worship Time                                                     Focus:  The Complexity of Life

Bible Reading & Meditation                                    Reference:  James 4:13

            1.  Message of the verse:  “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit.’” (NIKV)  “Look here, you people who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.’”  (NLT)

This verse starts a new chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s book called “Plan Ahead.”  In this section we will be discussing the will of God, and two of the sub topics will be an incorrect way looking at the will of God.  When we think about the will of God for our lives we must think about whom God is and in a believers’ case he must think about all that Jesus Christ has already done for him to buy us back from the slave market of sin, to redeem us.  The question that begs to be asked is how can we not trust God to show us what His will for us in light of what He has already done for us.  We must also think of the wisdom of God, and the love of God and the blessings of God for those who say to Him, “I Surrender All.”

A.     Ignoring God’s Will (4:13-14,16)

Our author believes that James may have been directing this section to the wealthy people who were part of this assembly.  These people seemed to be looking at life by how much they could accumulate even without seeking the counsel of God.

James will now present four arguments that will show how foolish anyone is who ignoring the will of God.

1.      The complexity of life (4:13).  It is almost impossible to describe how complex life is today, and it seems to be more complex by the day.  As we live our lives in this 21st century we can see that maybe because it is called the information age, and it surely is, that all of that information that we have so readily available makes life even more complex that it was just a few years ago.

Another question that I think needs to be answered is since we have become a believer and are privileged to know the Lord in a personal way and are able to see that He alone gives us an understanding of what life is all about, then how can the unbelieving world around us have any idea of what life is all about?

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The Lord Jesus Christ has taken the mystery out of life for me and has shown me that He is most important to me.  He is the only One who can make sense out of this confused world that I live in.  I give Him my life each day so that He can use me for His honor and glory.

The Word of God was refreshing to me as I read it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To give the Lord the worship that He deserves and to trust the Lord with every aspect of my life.

Draw Near to God and Humble Yourselves before God (James 4:8-10)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-22-03

My Worship Time      Focus:  Draw near to God & Humble yourselves before God

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  James 4:8-10

            1.  Message of the verse:  “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.  Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy to gloom.  Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.”  (NASB)  “Draw close to God, and God will draw close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, you hypocrites.  Let there be tears for the wrong things you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy.  When you bow down before the Lord and admit your dependence on him, he will lift you up and give you honor.”  (NLT)

How can a believer draw near to God?  James says that first of all we are to be clean or have a clean heart.  The word for cleanse as described in the Strong’s Concordance is

“1b) in a moral sense

1b1) to free from defilement of sin and from faults

1b2) to purify from wickedness

1b3) to free from guilt of sin, to purify

1b4) to consecrate by cleansing or purifying

1b5) to consecrate, dedicate”

The goal of every believer should be that of Romans 8:29, “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.”  The more we grow and mature in our walk with the Lord, the more we will be like Him, because in order to be like Him we have to draw near to Him with a clean heart.

Humble yourselves before God (4:9-10).  What is the opposite of humility?  The word used here for humble yourselves, “AV-humble 6, abase 5, humble (one’s) self 2, bring low 1; 14,” and one of the meanings given from Strong’s is, “metaph. to bring into a humble condition, reduce to meaner circumstances.”  The NLT seems to be giving a better idea of what the meaning of humble is, “When you bow down before the Lord and admit your dependence on him, he will lift you up and give you honor.”   Now as we look at pride, which is the opposite of humility we can see that it means to be lifted up, or to lift one’s self up.  As believers we are to lift up the name of the Lord, to worship Him, to adore Him, to place Him above everything, and when we have pride we are doing just like Satan did to cause him to fall and that is to lift ourselves up.

Again we can look at David to see an example of how a believer is to go the things that are described in these verses.  The two Psalms that he wrote as a result of His sin gives us much insight into what God would have us to do in order to Humble ourselves before Him, and how to draw near to God, and also how we are to submit ourselves to God.

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It seems to me that when God begins to move in my life that He puts His finger upon areas of my life that He desires for me to change, and as I go through these two trials that God is in the process of sending me through he is teaching me, among other things that I am to put my trust in Him and not the money He has entrusted me with, and that I have not been worshipping Him in a way that has been pleasing to Him.  I trust the Lord will continue to work in my life to continue to make me more and more like my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

The Word of God was refreshing to my heart, and encouragement to me this morning as I read it.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To trust the Lord in these two trials He has lead me into.  To continue to pray for the meeting today at 4:00 PM with Pastor Dunn and Bruce Konya, that the Lord would be glorified, that if the things that I have been learning from these verses apply to this situation in either one’s case that it would be cared for.  I pray that they would see the similarities that they have in their passion to help hurting people, and I pray that Bruce would get a firm grasp on the Sovereignty of God so that he will trust the Lord in a new and better way.

At war with God through his enemy: Satan (James 4:6-7)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  10-20-03

My Worship Time      Focus:  At war with God through his enemy:  Satan

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  James 4:6, 7

            1.  Message of the verse:  “But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ ‘Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.’”  (NIV)    “He gives us more and more strength to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say, ‘God sets himself against the proud, but he shows favor to the humble.’ ‘So humble yourselves before God. Resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.’”  (NLT)

The first enemy of God, the world, is in conflict with the Father, and the flesh is in conflict with the Holy Spirit, and this third enemy of God, the devil, is in conflict with the Lord Jesus Christ.  We can see in the gospels that the devil was in conflict with Jesus Christ throughout His ministry while upon the earth, and now the devil is in conflict with The Lord Jesus Christ’s Church.  How does the devil tempt believers into sinning?  He used pride to trap Eve, and this is still one of his prime ways of causing believers today to sin.  I have heard it said that the devil will use the flesh as a landing strip into the believer’s life, and if we are not aware of this he will set up a beachhead there.

            Submit To God:

In verse six James speaks of God giving more grace to those who are God’s, and God’s grace is greater than the power of sin, the flesh, and the world, and also Satan.  Romans 5:20 speaks to this, “And the Law came in that the transgression might increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.”  There is a song that speaks of this subject of God’s grace being greater than sin and the refrain goes, “Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within, Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin.”  (Page # 201)

There are two words that I want to look at in verse 7, and they are “submit” and “resist.”  Submit is one of those words used in the Bible that at times make men happy to learn about, for the Bible says that wives should submit to their husbands and sometimes we can get a wrong view of this word.  The word “submit” is a military word that means to line up under the authority of a persons commander.  Let’s look at a couple of places where this word or concept of submission is used in the Scriptures.  Luke 2: 51 “And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.”  This speaks of Jesus being submitted to His parents.  What we are saying here is that the creator of this world was in submission to the rule of His earthly parents, those whom He had created.  Romans 13:1 “Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.”   This verse speaks of being in submission to the government, and notice that it says that is comes from the authority of God.  Ephesians 5:24 “But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.”  This verse teaches that the Church is to be in submission to Christ and also wives to their husbands.

Now the word “resist” is the flip side of submit, and we as believers are to resist the devil.  The word means to take your stand against.  The Bible teaches that there are only two kinds of people on this earth, those who have Jesus Christ as their Lord or those who have Satan as their lord, for there is no middle ground.  Ephesians 2:22 “Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.”   John 8:44, “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies.”  1John 5: 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

There is an illustration that testifies to submission to God and that can be seen in the story of David’s sin with Bathsheba.  When David committed this sin with her he declared war with God, and this war went on for a year until he confessed his sin to God with the encouragement of the prophet Nathan.  David said of this in Psalm 32:5, “I acknowledged my sin to Thee, And my iniquity I did not hide; I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD"; And Thou didst forgive the guilt of my sin. Selah.”  And in Psalm 51:10-13, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Do not cast me away from Thy presence, And do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me.

Restore to me the joy of Thy salvation, And sustain me with a willing spirit.  Then I will teach transgressors Thy ways, And sinners will be converted to Thee.”  Dr. Wiersbe says of this submission that it is an act of the will saying “not my will be done, but thy will be done.”

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Sometimes it is good to be reminded of the truths that have been learned in times past, and this section on resisting the evil one has been one of them.  I needed to be reminded that I am to resist the evil one, and also that God’s grace is greater than all of my sin.  This surely does not give me a license to sin, in fact just the opposite, as I look at what it cost God to provide this grace for my sin, then that should make me want to live a life that is in submission tot the One who loves me enough to pay the price for my sin.

The Word of God was a good reminder of truths I have learned in the past, and need to continue to live by them always.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To apologize to my wife for becoming angry with her yesterday.  To continue to trust the Lord in this trial that He has sent my way, and to be open to do what Christ would have me to do today.

Memory verse for this week:  James 1:1-4 (go over them this week)

1.      James, a bondservant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad, greetings.

2.      Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials.
