PT-3 "The Believer's Life Principles" (Eph. 5:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/20/2019 12:52 PM

My Worship Time                                                   Focus:  PT-3 “The Believer’s Life Principles”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Ephesians 5:15

Message of the verse:  “15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,”

I have been thinking about what John MacArthur wrote in this section of his commentary and mentioned in our last SD that I had some problems with his Lordship of Christ issues, but after reading what he had to say about it and thinking about it I don’t have near as many problems with it as before.  Let me explain:  In his commentary he talks about easy believism which I believe is a big problem in our churches today.  Someone hears the gospel and then makes a profession of faith in Jesus Christ but after that there is no fruit seen in the life of that believer, as it seems that life goes on like it did in the past before accepting Christ as their Savior.  This person may look back to a time in their life when they said a prayer to accept Christ as their Savior and believe that they truly are true believers, but just saying a prayer to accept Christ as your Savior, and not realize that He is the Lord of your life does not necessarily mean that you are a believer.  At any rate I believe I understand what MacArthur is getting at with this issue.  My thoughts are, and have for the most part of my Christian life are, that it is God who chose those who believe in eternity past, and then Christ came to pay for our sins, and after that the Holy Spirit of God gives and effectual call, a call that a person cannot say no to, a call that in a spiritual sense gives life to that person whom He is calling.  It was the Holy Spirit who raised up Jesus Christ from the dead and it is the Holy Spirit who gives life to an unbeliever in his call to them for salvation.  As an unbeliever when you receive this call for salvation you will then will accept this call, confess that you are a sinner and receive Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.

We can look at the Old Testament saints and see that there were times when they were seen as not immune from reverting to foolishness.  Examples of Saul and David can be seen in the books of 1 and 2 Samuel.  Saul tried to kill David and David numbered the people, which was a sin because he did not trust the Lord.  John MacArthur writes “The first way a believer plays the fool is by not believing God completely.  He believes God for salvation but does not continue to believe Him in and for everything else.  Jesus told the two disheartened disciples on the road to Emmaus, ‘O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken’ (Luke 24:25).  To the extent that we do not accept any part of God’s Word, to that extent we are foolish.”

Whenever a believer is disobedient he is also playing the fool as Paul speaks of in Galatian 3:1-3 (emphasis on 1 and 3):  “1 You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?”  These foolish Galatians failed to hold firmly to the doctrine of salvation by faith alone and thus the Galatians fell prey to the heresy that a Gentile must become a ceremonial Jew before he could become a Christian.

Another foolish thing a believe can do is to put their trust in the wrong thing “But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction” (1 Timothy 6:9)”  I was looking at an old movie last night in which three men were prospecting for gold and once they found it the wanted to kill each other to keep all of the gold, which is not what they said they would do once they found the gold, but the gold changed them, and in the same way riches can change a person as they stop putting their trust in the Lord, and put their trust in the temporary riches of this world.  There is a verse that I think is in the Psalms that the author states that he did not want to be real rich so that he would not trust the Lord, and not want to be real poor so that he would revert to stealing.  I certainly agree with him.

John MacArthur writes “There is no excuse for Christians to live foolishly when God’s wisdom belongs to them.  ‘If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, ‘Jesus said to the Jews (John 7:17).  The Christian who genuinely wants to know God’s truth will never be in doubt, either.  He has all the resources he needs ‘to be wise in what is good and innocent in what is evil’ (Rom. 16:19).”

I want to conclude this SD with a story John MacArthur writes in his commentary:  “Some years ago I met a recently converted young woman who was a nationally ranked distance runner.  To keep in shape she ran fifteen miles a day.  A month or so later she came up to me after a morning worship service and asked if I remembered her.  She seemed familiar but had changed so much during that brief time that I did not recognize her.  She told me who she was and explained that she had contracted a disease that the doctors had not yet been able to diagnose and that left her barely able to walk.  Rather than being discouraged, however, she said that she was determined to channel the discipline that had made her such a fine athlete into discipline for the things of the Lord.  That is the mark of a wise Christian.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is my desire to life a wise life, a life that will be pleasing to the Lord.  I know that there have been times when I have failed to live that kind of life, but that does not mean that I do not want to live that kind of life, a life that is pleasing to the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  I truly believe that a humble life is a life that is pleasing to the Lord.

Today’s verse that goes along with Abraham Lincoln’s quote is from Daniel 3:17-18:  “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will deliver us from your hand, O king.  But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we do not serve your gods, nor will we worship the gold image which you have set up.”

PT-2 "The Believer's Life Principles" (Eph. 5:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/19/2019 9:36 AM

My Worship Time                                                   Focus:  PT-2 “The Believer’s Life Principles”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Ephesians 5:15

Message of the verses:  “15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,”

One of the things that John MacArthur believes in is that when a person accepts the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior they must accept them as their Lord.  It is called the Lordship salvation.  I have spoken to different Pastors about this who do not believe this to be true.  One of the things that I believe happened to me when I was saved was that I did not realize that Jesus Christ was my Lord, but knew at that time that He was indeed my Savior.  God called me to Himself in January of 1974 as I have stated in my Spiritual Diaries on a number of occasions, and all that I knew at that time was that I was different, I had not only new goals for my life but the Lord gave me a new vocabulary, that is I lost the desire to swear, as it was the Lord who took this away from me.  Later on in my walk with the Lord I realized that He was not only my Savior but also my Lord and that has never changed.  The process of sanctification has three parts, the first part is that once a person is born into the family of God that they are sanctified, and as they grow in their walk with the Lord it is the continue process of sanctification, and once they get to heaven the sanctification process is complete.  In my opinion not many people realize that Jesus Christ is their Lord right at the point of salvation, but a true believer will realize this as the process of sanctification works in their life.  I believe that a true believer realizes that Jesus Christ is their Lord during this process, and this means that the person is truly born-again.

John MacArthur writes “Akribos (‘careful’) has the basic meaning of accurate and exact, and carries the associated idea of looking, examining, and investigating something with great care.  It also carries the idea of alertness.  As believers walk through the spiritual mine field of the world, they are to be constantly alert to every danger that Satan puts in their way.  That is why Jesus warned that ‘the gate is small, and the way is narrow that leads to life’ (Matt. 7:14).”

In his commentary on this verse in Ephesians MacArthur mentions that there are two things that speak of this careful walk with the Lord.  The first one he mentions comes from the  second chapter of Proverbs which the writer of Proverbs speaks of walking in the wise path and the wise way and of not going into the way of the wicked or straying into the company of evil people.  The second example is from the great book written by John Bunyan; “Pilgrim’s Progress.”  This book is about a man named Christian as it describes his walk with the Lord in making his way to heaven.  I have to admit that I have never read this book through but at times have read portions from it.  I know that it is a classic and one day it is my desire to perhaps listen to this book on audio.

In a believer’s walk with the Lord at times it is an “unwise” walk as the believer falls into traps set by the devil which can cause them to begin to once again walk in the ways of the world.  I have to admit that because I was a few months from my 27th birthday when God called me to Himself that I had a lot of living in the world in those 26+ years and at times there is a pull to go back to those ways, something I must continue to understand as a trap from the devil or even my own flesh.  Paul wrote to Titus the following in 3:3 “For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.”  This verse shows us the kind of living from which God’s wisdom is to separate us.  “4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior” (Titus 4:6).  This is what happened to all true believers when they were saved.  MacArthur adds “Our change in relationship to God is meant to bring a change in daily living, as Paul went on to explain to Titus:  ‘8  This is a trustworthy statement; and concerning these things I want you to speak confidently, so that those who have believed God will be careful to engage in good deeds. These things are good and profitable for men.’”

It is my desire, Lord willing, to finish looking at verse 15 in our next SD.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am thankful that Jesus Christ is my Savior and my Lord and that because of His death, burial, and resurrection I can be born into His family and look forward to living with Him in the New Jerusalem some day.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Humility is something that when you notice you have it you have then lost it.  It is my desire to be humble before my Lord each day.

Today’s quote is from Abraham Lincoln who said “To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men.”  I have to say that this goes along with what we were just looking at in our study of Ephesians; something that I wrote had to do with the abortion industry in our country.

PT-1 "The Believer's Life Principles" (Eph. 5:15)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/18/2019 8:44 AM

My Worship Time                                                   Focus:  PT-1 “The Believer’s Life Principles”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Ephesians 5:15

Message of the verse:  “Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise” (Eph. 5:15).

As we look at this verse we should know that the literal meaning of the Greek term that is translated “be” is “look, or observe,” and so that means that Paul’s command for believers  is to see that they “walk” carefully is based on what he just had been teaching. We can see this also from the word “therefore” which begins verse fifteen.  Therefore refers immediately back to the apostle’s call for believers to walk as those who have been raised from the dead and for those who are living in Christ’s light as seen in verse 14.  “14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.’”  John MacArthur writes “It also reaches even further back to build upon his call for believers to be imitators of their heavenly Father (5:1).  Christians are to walk wisely rather than unwisely because they are God’s beloved children, saved through the sacrifice of His beloved Son (5:1-2).  Only the wise walk befits the children of God.”

We see in our verse that as believers we are to walk as wise men.  This can be better understood by looking at the many times we see the words “in Christ” in the letter to the Ephesians, and so since we are in Christ we should correspond to what we are, and that includes the truth that we are one, we are separated, we are love, we are light and we are wise.

We mentioned in our last SD about the truth that once we are born into the family of God and become His child that we are made wise.  2 Timothy 3:15 tells us “and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”  MacArthur adds “By God’s grace, the saved ‘are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption’ (1 Cor. 1:30).  Just as in Christ God miraculously makes us immediately righteous, sanctified, and redeemed, He also makes us immediately wise.”  Let me give you an example from this wisdom that God has given to me, something that is one of my favorite things to write about and that is evolution.  My 7th grade Biology teacher, Mrs. Mack, taught some things about evolution that at the time made sense to me, and for one thing I decided that I did not need to attend church anymore because evolution teaches that we are an accident and that there is no God.  After I became a believer I knew that evolution is a lie and impossible to happen, so impossible that not even God could make evolution happen.  You may say that God can do anything, and the truth is that God can do anything as long as it goes along with His attributes, and evolution does not fit into His attributes so that makes it impossible for God to make it work.  The point is that because of God’s wisdom given to me I see things now in a much different light, in God’s light.

Now because when we were saved and receive wisdom we are responsibility for our behavior.  MacArthur adds “Because we are in Christ, ‘the treasures of wisdom and knowledge’ that are hidden in Him (Col. 2:3) are therefore also hidden in us.  John wrote of the Holy Spirit, the resident truth teacher is in the life of every saint:  ‘But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.  I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it’ (John 2:20-21).  Further, he said, ‘You have no need for anyone [any human teacher with simply human wisdom] to teach you,’ because ‘His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true’ (v. 27).  We cannot have salvation without God’s wisdom any more that we can have salvation without his righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Make sure that I walk in the wisdom that God has given to me as is evident in the passages we have been looking at.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Walking in wisdom means to be walking in humility.

Today’s verse that goes along with yesterday’s quote from Gordon Lindsay:  “Lord I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24).

PT-3 "Intro to Walking in Wisdom" (Eph. 5:15-17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/17/2019 8:58 AM

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  PT-3 “Intro to Walking in Wisdom”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Eph. 5:15-17

Message of the verses:  “15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16  making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

Let us begin by looking at 2 Timothy 3:7 which will help us see that the ultimate destiny of fools is that they are “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”  Then Proverbs 10:21 tells us that they “die for lack of understanding,” and this is done even while they accumulate great amounts of information, such as we saw in our last SD.  The irony is that they become smarter and more foolish at the same time.  MacArthur adds “Foolishness comes from trusting in purely human knowledge and excluding divine knowledge.  Men’s foolishness increases with their knowledge only when their self-reliance increases.  The natural, unregenerate man suffers from his congenital and terminal foolishness because he will not submit to God.  He accumulates vast knowledge apart from God, but spiritual understanding and divine wisdom elude him.  He hates the truth about sin and salvation.”  If there was ever a time in our countries history that this is true it is the time we are living in at this time in our countries history.

Let us look at Proverbs 1:7 to show us where wisdom begins “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.”  This continues by acknowledging His truth and His ways as seen in Eccles. 9:1 “For I have taken all this to my heart and explain it that righteous men, wise men, and their deeds are in the hand of God. Man does not know whether it will be love or hatred; anything awaits him.”  The way of wisdom and the way of life is the way of God.  There is only one way that can overcome a man’s foolishness and turn him to wisdom and that is salvation, that is turning to God through Jesus Christ.  When we turn from foolishness to wisdom that is turning from self to God, as seen in God’s own Word that is “able to give [us] the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” (2 Tim. 3:15).

It was during Paul’s life that the Greeks were into wisdom, but Paul was not interested in their kind of wisdom, but in the wisdom that a person receives whenever they turn to Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.

John MacArthur is speaking of this kind of wisdom from the Greeks and contrasts it by writing “In Scripture, on the other hand, wisdom is centered in conviction and behavior, specifically in recognizing and obeying God.  When a person is saved he is moved from the realm of foolishness into the realm of wisdom.  Just as his being a Christian leads him to walk worthily (4:1), humbly (4:2), in unity (4:3-16), separated from the world’s ways (4:17-32), in love (5:1-7), and in light (5:8-14), it also leads him to walk in wisdom (5:15-17).

“In the present passage, Paul mentions three things that the Lord’s wisdom teaches His child.  The wise believer knows his life principles, his limited privileges, and his Lord’s purposes.”

Lord willing, we will begin by looking at “The Believer’s Life Principles” from Ephesians 5:15 in our next SD.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is good to realize that when I became a believer in Jesus Christ that I went from foolishness to becoming a wise person and this was all because of what the Lord did for me to which I am eternally thankful.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Humility certainly has to do with having wisdom, something that I am working on and understanding as I continue to look at humility in my life this year.

Today we have a short quotation from Gordon Lindsay:  “Never dig up in unbelief what you have sown in faith.”

PT-2 "Intro to Walking in Wisdom" (Eph. 5:17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/16/2019 10:21 PM

My Worship Time                                                    Focus:  PT-2 “Intro. To Walking in Wisdom”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Ephesians 5:15-17

Message of the verses:  “15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

We have been talking about fools in our last SD, and will continue to do so in this SD as well, and then begin to talk about wisdom afterwards.

One may wonder why a person who is unregenerate is a fool, and the answer is that he denies God by belief and also by his practice.  An unregenerate person makes himself out to be his own god, and therefore he thinks that he does not have any need for the One True God.  This person will then give his own foolishness to his children and his friends.

Proverbs 1:29-32 “29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD. 30 “They would not accept my counsel, They spurned all my reproof. 31 “So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way And be satiated with their own devices. 32 “For the waywardness of the naive will kill them, And the complacency of fools will destroy them.”

John MacArthur writes “The knowledge that the ungodly person hates is not practical, factual knowledge.  On the contrary, he prides himself in how much he knows.  Someone has estimated that, if all of man’s accumulated knowledge from the beginning of recorded history to 1845 were represented by one inch, what he learned from 1845 until 1945 would amount to three inches and what he learned from 1945-1975 would represent the height of the Washington Monument!  Since then it has probably doubled.  Few people, however, would argue that the incredible leap in scientific, technological, and other such knowledge has been paralleled by a corresponding leap in common sense wisdom, not to mention spiritual and moral wisdom.  If anything, man’s understanding of what he is and doing and what he is doing it seems to decrease as his practical knowledge increases.  The more learned he becomes in that superficial kind of knowledge, the less need he sees for the knowledge that comes only from God.”

In preparation for my Sunday School class for this week from Revelation chapter 22 I ran into some things that were disturbing to me, and I believe that they pretty much go along with what we see in the statistics from the above paragraph.  The problem or at least one of the problems that is going on in our Christian churches is that many, perhaps most believers, do not think about heaven much anymore, and as you correlate the increase of learning, especially technology you will then see that as it grew the study and learning about heaven decreased as rapidly as learning increased.  I suppose you could say that this is foolishness.

The verse that goes along with our last quotation is from 1 Peter 5:5b-6:  “Be clothed with humility, for ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’  Therefore humble

yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”

PT-1 "Intro to Eph. 5:15-17

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/15/2019 11:16 AM

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  PT-1 “Intro to Eph. 5:15-17”

John MacArthur entitles his 17th chapter of his commentary on Ephesians “Walking in Wisdom,” and as we can see it only has three verses in it.

When we think of how we use the word “fool” in our life these days it is not the way that the Bible talks about a person who is a fool.  I have always thought that the first of April, “April Fool’s Day” is a good description of a person who does not believe in God.  “The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt, they have committed abominable deeds; There is no one who does good” (Ps. 14:1).  This verse speaks of a person who is an atheist who has no room for God and who cares nothing for God.  I am sorry to say that our country, the United States of America, is divided between those who believe in God and those who don’t, and this is a by-product of evolution.

Every person who is born is born an enemy of God, separated from God because of their Adamic sin.  These are some verses that speak to this truth “Romans 5:8, 10; Eph. 2:3; and Col. 1:21.”  1 Corinthians 2:14 tells us “But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.”  Let us now look at Romans 1:21-22 “21 For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools.”

There are many people today who do not believe in the One True God, and yet they have gods of their own that they do believe in, and this again as we have seen in some of these verses is foolishness.

John MacArthur writes “When the fool sets himself up as his own god, he will naturally ‘mock at sin’ (Prov. 14:9).  Sin is that which is against God, and since the fool does not recognize God, he does not recognize sin.  The Spiritually self-sufficient fool makes his own rules and justifies his own behavior, and in doing so he refuses to acknowledge sin and its consequences.”  Once again we can draw evolution into this quote as a reason people do not believe in God for after all if we are just an accident then why would we be accountable to any God who may have created all we see.

Another thing that a fool does is, and he can’t help himself, is spread his own foolishness.  The more he believes his foolishness the more he will tell others about it. It makes no difference what his intellectual level, or academic achievements, talents, wealth, or reputation, the mouth of the natural man can spiritually do nothing but spout folly as seen in Proverbs 15:2 “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable, But the mouth of fools spouts folly.”

We will continue our discussion, Lord willing, on fools in our next SD, and then we will begin to talk about wisdom, a much more pleasant subject.

Today’s quotation is from Jonathan Edwards who said “Nothing sets a person so much out of the devil’s reach as humility.”  (This passage truly speaks to my heart.)

The Call (Eph. 5:14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 6/14/2019 10:12 AM

My Worship Time                                                                                          Focus:  “The Call”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                             Reference:  Eph. 5:14

Message of the verses:  “14 For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you."

We have mentioned from time to time that people who are not true believers have a difficult time in understanding the true meaning of Scripture as I have said it is like reading someone else’s mail.  However in this section, (v. 14), Paul gives something for those who are not in the light, not believers, as he tells them to wake up, “arise from the dead.”  If you are not a true believer and are reading this that advice is for you, that call is for you.

Let us look at Isaiah 60:1 “"Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.”  This verse is probably the verse that was known by Paul and used in this letter to the Ephesians in verse 14.  “Paul is showing the prophetic meaning of those texts by declaring that “the glory of the Lord [that] has risen’ is none other than Jesus Christ, the Messiah for whom and in whom Isaiah and every other godly Jew had so longed for.”

John MacArthur in his commentary writes that many commentators believe that this verse was taken from an “Easter” hymn that was sung by the early church.  It reminds him of a “spiritual Rip Van Winkle” as he will sleep through God’s time of grace unless there is someone to awaken him in order to be saved.

MacArthur writes “Arise from the dead is a summons to repentance, an appeal to turn away from the dead ways of sin.  Christ will shine on you is the good news that God has provided a remedy for every sinful person who will come to Him through His blessed Son, the Savior of mankind.  (See Isa. 55:6-7 for a similar Old Testament invitation.)  “6 Seek the LORD while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way And the unrighteous man his thoughts; And let him return to the LORD, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.”

The following is from Horatius Bonar which MacArthur adds in his commentary.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

“I am this dark world’s light;

Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise,

And all thy day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found

In Him my star, my sun’

And in that light of life “I’ll walk,

Till traveling days are done.

“Proverbs 4:18 sums up the words of the apostle:  ‘The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is my desire that as I write these Spiritual Diaries each day that those who are in darkness will see the Light and come to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust that the Lord will continue to bring situations into my life where He will teach me more about humility.

Scripture that goes along with what J. I. Packer quotation from yesterday:  “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but Fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Pro. 1:7).
