God's Oath (Heb. 6:17-18)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 03-09-03

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  God’s oath

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 6:17-18

Message of the verse:  “In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, in order that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have strong encouragement, we who have fled for refuge in laying hold of the hope set before us.  (NASB)  “God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that He would never change His mind.  So God has given us both His promise and His oath.  These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie.  Therefore, we who have fled to Him for refuge can take new courage, for we can hold on to His promise with confidence.”  (NLT)

The writer continues to encourage his readers with the assurance of salvation, which is one of the points he is making in this section.  These verses speak of two unchangeable things, which are God’s promise and His oath.  The word for unchangeable in the Greek was used in the process of a will in which the person who drew up the will was the only one who could change it.  This shows the truth of these promises from God to those who belong to Him.  In verse 18 the writer speaks of refuge and when used in the LXX it is the same word for the cities of refuge that are spoken of in the books of Numbers and Joshua.  These were cities that a person could flee to if He committed a murder that was an accident of self-defense.  This pictures the believer today as he takes refuge in the Lord Jesus Christ who has paid for all our sins and now is seated at the right hand of God as our High Priest.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am so thankful that the Lord Jesus Christ is my refuge and my strength who is a very present help in times of trouble.  I am thankful that He is my all-sufficient High Priest who has going through all the things that I go through yet without sin.

The Word of God was very refreshing to my heart this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I would pray that the Lord would use the services at our Church to speak to my heart and that I may bring praise and worship to Him that will bless His Heart.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 40:1-4

  1. I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.
  2. He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.
  3. And He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear, And will trust in the LORD.
  4. How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.
