My Worship Time Focus:
Psalm 109
PT-3
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: Psalm
109:21-31
Message
of the verses: In Today’s SD we will
look at the last main point from the 109th Psalm remembering that it
is the last of what Bible Scholars call imprecatory psalms.
Lord
Help Me! (vv 21-32): “21 But You, O
GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for Your name’s sake; Because Your
lovingkindness is good, deliver me; 22
For I am afflicted and needy, And my heart is wounded within me. 23 I am
passing like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like the locust. 24 My
knees are weak from fasting, And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness. 25 I
also have become a reproach to them; When they see me, they wag their head. 26
Help me, O LORD my God; Save me according to Your lovingkindness. 27 And let
them know that this is Your hand; You, LORD, have done it. 28 Let them curse,
but You bless; When they arise, they shall be ashamed, But Your servant shall
be glad. 29 Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover
themselves with their own shame as with a robe. 30 With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the
LORD; And in the midst of many I will praise Him. 31 For He stands at the right
hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul.”
We see in verses 21&27 that
David appeals to God on the basis of His name, for David knew that he could not
come to God on his own merit, he then appeals to God on the basis of one of His
attributes; the attribute of love, for David knew who His God was because David
knew His attributes. God would receive
the glory for dealing kindly with David and for His lovingkindness towards
David. David desired that God would do
something wonderful for him so that the enemies of David would understand that
it was God who was working on the behalf of David because of His love for David
and because David was a faithful son of the covenant.
David was poor and needy and desired
for the Lord to know this so that He would help him. Now we know that God knew this, but it is
good for us to tell God what our troubles are as this will increase our faith
when the Lord answers our prayers.
David was weak from fasting,
something that the Church would do good to remember and to practice. David felt like his life was almost over, but
we know if this psalm was written before David became king that down in his
heart of hearts he knew that God would save him from this trouble.
David wanted the Lord to send him a
blessing every time his enemies cursed him to then bring shame on his
enemies. Again we have to remember that
the Lord had by this time make a covenant with David, that through his seed the
Messiah would be born and so David had the right to pray the way he did about
his enemies. Do we have that right
today? A question that needs to be
answered in a correct manner for we do not have the right to wish upon our enemies
the things that David did in this psalm if it does not bring glory to the Lord
and we know this because of what Paul writes:
“Ro 12:20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is
thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning
coals on his head.’” Paul also wrote
that as believers we can be angry, but we are not to sin in our anger and we
are not to let the sun go down on our anger.
An issue that is near and dear to my heart is the issue of abortion and abortion
is a great sin that has been going on in our country “legally” since 1973 and I
believe that it is right to be angry over this issue because I know that God is
angry over this issue. Should I do
something harmful to those who believe in abortion? The answer is NO, but we must remember that
vengeance is mine saith the Lord. I
trust the Lord to bring about the punishment that these people deserve in His
own time and in His own way.
In the last portion of this psalm
David promises to praise the Lord and to give glory to Him when all these
trials were over, and David was true to his word. We see that after David was made king that he
would bring the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem and he sought to honor the
Lord (See 2 Sam. 5-6). Dr. Wiersbe
writes, “God did help David, in His own time and His own way, and so He will do
for us.”
Spiritual
meaning for my life today: Learning
that God has His own plan for our lives and will do things for us in His own
way and in His own time is difficult to handle at certain times in our lives,
but as we go through the tests in life that God brings to us we will have to
trust the Lord, for He is always good and will do what is best for us in order
to conform us to the image of His Son.
My Steps of Faith for Today:
Trust the Lord to work in my life so that I can bring glory to His name
in a task that will be difficult for me to do, but one that I believe that God
will use to bring glory to His name.
Memory
Verses for the Week: 2Peter 1:1-8
1.
Simon
Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ ,
To
those who have a faith of the same kind as ours by the righteousness of our God
and
Savior,
Jesus Christ: 2. Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God
and of Jesus our Lord, 3. seeing that His divine Power has granted to us
everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him
who called us by His own glory and excellence.
For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises,
so that by them you may become partakers of the divine truth, having escaped
the corruption that is in the world by lust.
5. Now for this very reason also,
applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your
moral excellence knowledge, 6. and in your knowledge self-control, and in your
self-control perseverance, and in your perseverance godliness, 7. and in your
godliness brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness love. 8. For if
these qualities are yours and increasing, they render you neither useless nor
unfruitful in the true knowledge of Jesus Christ our Lord.
