PT-1 "Reasons For Putting Sin to Death" (Col. 3:5-6)

My Worship Time                                              Focus:  PT-1 “Reasons For Putting Sin to Death”

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Focus:  Colossians 3:5-6

            Message of the verses:  “For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come, and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.”

            Paul will pause between the lists of sins in the third chapter of Colossians and gives two strong motivating reasons showing that we should be putting sin to death.

            We will look at the first reason in this SD entitled “Sin Brings God’s Judgment” which comes from verse six “For it is on account of these things that the wrath of God will come.”

            MacArthur quotes Arthur W. Pink from his book on the Attributes of God as he writes about God’s wrath:  “His eternal detestation of all unrighteousness.  It is the displeasure and indignation of Divine equity against evil.  It is the holiness of God stirred into activity against sin.”

            Paul writes in Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.”  All unbelievers will experience the full force of God’s eternal wrath as seen here in this verse, and the reason is that unbelievers do not have faith in Christ.  John the Baptist says the following in John 3:36 “"He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."”  Romans 2:5 “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God.”

            Now when Paul speaks “on account of these things,” he is speaking of the things we studied in our last four SD’s where sins were listed.  Some believe that sin will bring happiness, but it does not, it will always bring wrath, either the unbeliever will pay for his sinfulness or will come to Christ who paid for his sin as He took the wrath of God upon Himself while on the cross. 

            Now we have been over this ground before, but worth mentioning again and that is although believers have been delivered from God’s wrath as seen in Romans 5:9 “Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him,” believers can still be chastened by God as seen in Hebrews 12:5-6 “5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6  For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives."”  MacArthur concludes “God will react against sin.  The unbeliever will experience His eternal wrath, and the believer His loving chastening.  Either way, all who pursues sin will suffer the consequences.”   4/22/2017 8:38 PM
