PT-2 "A Word to Wives" (Col. 3:18)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 5/19/2017 5:00 PM

My Worship Time                                                                           Focus:  PT-2 A Word to Wives

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  Colossians 3:18

Message of the verse:  “Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.”  “22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything (Eph. 5:22-24).”

I have included the verses from Ephesians as they are very similar to the ones from Colossians, and actually give more information in them.

We want to begin by looking at what John MacArthur has to say about the words “Be subject to,” as it “is from hupotasso, and means ‘to subject oneself.’  It has the concept of putting oneself under (‘hupo’), not by compulsion, but willingly.  The term is used in Luke 2:51 to refer to Jesus’ subjection to His parents, and in Luke 10:17, 20 to describe demons being subject to the disciples.  In Romans 8:7, Paul employs the word to speak of being submissive to the commands of God’s law.  His use of it in Romans 13:1, 5 refers to the necessary submission of every person to governing authority, which is established by God.  In both 1 Corinthians 15:27-28 and Ephesians 1:22, the verb looks to the time when all things in the universe are made subject to Christ and God in eternal glory.

“Paul’s word to wives is be submissive to ‘your’ husbands.  They do not submit to some detached, impersonal authority.  Rather, they submit to the man with whom they have an intimate, personal, vital relationship.  Ephesians 5:22 adds the word ‘own’ (‘your own husband’) to demonstrate the uniqueness of this exclusive submission.”

We mentioned in our last SD that submission did not imply inferiority.  Let us look at Galatians 3:28 “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”  You can see from this verse that all are one in Christ Jesus, whether male or female.  We also mentioned the trinity and how in the trinity that the Son submitted to the Father to do His will when He came to earth to fulfill the plan that they worked out in eternity past.  Wives should not submit to their husbands if what he is asking her to do goes against God’s law.  Think about the passage in the book of Acts when the Jewish authorities were asking the disciples not to preach in the name of Jesus and Peter told them that they should obey God and not man, and yet Paul writes that as believers we are to submit to local government.  God’s laws supersede if someone is told to do something against His laws.

Finally husband’s authority is not to be exercised in an authoritative, overbearing manner as the wife’s submission takes place in the context of a loving relationship.

The last phrase “fitting in the Lord” and the Greek form expresses an obligation, a necessary duty.  This is how the Lord designed and commands the family to operate.

In our country today things like this are all messed up in many cases.  Just keep in mind it is always the best to operate under the guidelines of Scripture and God will bless that.
