A Saving Sacrifice (Heb. 10:10)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time      Focus:  A saving sacrifice

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  Hebrews 10:10

            1.  Message of the verse:  “By this will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”  (KJ21)  “And what God wants is for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time.”  (NLT)

This small verse is rich in it’s meaning.  After looking at man different versions of this verse I have chosen these two to make my commits on.  The first part of this verse speaks of the “will” and I believe that it is referring to both the will of the Father and the will of Jesus Christ here.  John Gill had this to say on this subject of the “will”: That is, by the sacrifice of Christ, which was willingly offered up by himself, and was according to the will of God; it was his will of purpose that Christ should be crucified and slain; and it was his will of command, that he should lay down his life for his people; and it was grateful and well pleasing to him, that his soul should be made an offering for sin.  In the quotation from Psalm 40 that the writer used in the previous verses it stated that “I delight to do Thy will O God, Thy law is within my heart.”

It is because of this will of God that we are sanctified, and that is the next word that I wish to look at this morning.  The word, as translated in the NLT and many other translations is “to be made holy,” and that is exactly what every believer in Jesus Christ is in position the moment they are saved.  The difference between this in the OT sacrifices and in Christ’s sacrifice is that in the OT time a person had to be purified for many things including touching a dead body, or when a woman had her period she was unclean and not able to participate in the worship of the Lord.  Because of Chris sacrifice we are able to participate in the worship of the Lord because we have been made holy, once and for all, by that sacrifice.  As stated at the beginning of this verse that was the will of God for us.  The word “body” is used in the same sense as the word “blood” has been used in this section of Hebrews, and it is speaking of the death of Christ, but it may have been used here because it was used in the previous verses that were quoted from Psalm 40.  John Gill says that this does not just mean the body, but the “whole human nature.”

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  One of the things that struck me as I read this verse was the fact that Christ’s sacrifice for me has given me freedom from doing the things of the OT law, which is one of the reasons for His death.  I do not have to offer any animal sacrifices in order to worship the Lord.  I am thankful for the freedom that the Lord Jesus Christ has provided me because of His perfect sacrifice.

The Word of God was both refreshing and very instructive to me as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To trust the Lord to deal with these different areas in my life, the area of selfishness, fear, and IBS.  I trust that the Lord will continue to transform me into His image by giving me more compassion, more courage, and victory over the mental aspects of IBS.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 40: 12 & 1John 4:18

12. For evils beyond numbers have surrounded me; my iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see; They are more numerous than the hairs of my head; And my heart has failed me.

18.  There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
