The Perfect Law of Liberty (James 1:25)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 09-05-03

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Perfect Law of Liberty

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  James 1:25

Message of the verse:  “25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”  (NKJV)  “But if you keep looking steadily into God’s perfect law—the law that set you free—and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.”  (NLT)

James has been speaking about the mirror being the Word of God, and now in this verse he changes from calling it a mirror to calling it the “perfect law of liberty.”  As stated yesterday when we look into the mirror of God’s Word it will show us imperfections in our Christian life, but now James speaks of having liberty when we obey the Word of God that actually convicts us.  It does seem paradoxical that a law can give us freedom, but then there are many things in the Christian life that are paradoxical.  Jesus died so that we can live; we die to ourselves so that we can live.  James goes on to say that if a believer continues to look into the perfect law of liberty that he will be blessed.  Jesus spoke of this in John 8:31-32 “Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”  The question may be asked as to what we are in bondage to?  The answer, of course, is sin.

When God created Adam & Eve they were in perfect fellowship with God because there was no sin in their lives, but as soon as they sinned they became slaves to sin, as all of us who were born after them who were born of the seed of man.  Now by looking into God’s perfect law of liberty and obeying it we will learn about this liberty.  If we look into this law and it convicts us and we do not obey then we will not experience this liberty.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I have learned from these verses I have studied in the last couple of days is that I need to be a doer of the Word and not only a hearer of it.

The Word of God brought conviction to my heart again as I read it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To trust the Lord to search me and to convict me and then to obey Him.  I trust the Lord to have the men He wants at our Bible Study today and that He will use me to help bring about maturity to our group through the power of His Holy Spirit and His Word.
