PT-1 "Wisdom Perfects Our Path" (Pr. 4:1-9)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/8/2013 10:21 AM

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Wisdom Perfects Our Path PT-1

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Proverbs 4:1-9

Message of the verses:  In Today’s Spiritual Diary we will begin to look at chapter four of the book of Proverbs.  “Wisdom Perfects Our Path” is the third main point from the outline given in Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on Proverbs.

Yesterday I began to put on the SD “Turning Points Wisdom” and I will continue to do this.  “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to the person on which it is poured.”  (Author Unknown”  “For I know what You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness.”  (Jonah 4:2b)

As Dr. Wiersbe begins his introductory commentary on this third main point he states that Proverbs 4:18 is the key verse in the 4th chapter of Proverbs, “But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, That shines brighter and brighter until the full day.”  As we walk in the light of God’s Word we will continue to gain wisdom and the more we learn the brighter the light will shine.  I am not saying that life is not tough at times, but if we continue to walk in the light then we will get through the tough times and even learn from them, which will bring glory to our Lord and Savior.  Ephesians 2:10, one of my favorite verses tells us that God has a plan for each of His children and as we walk in the light of His Word, gaining wisdom then we will do the work that God has given us to do all the way back in eternity past.  Dr. Wiersbe concludes his introduction to this section with these words, “Our path may not be an easy one, but it will always be a fulfilling one as we walk in the will of the Father.  This involves three responsibilities on our part: knowing God’s Word (Proverbs 4:1-9), trusting God’s providence (vv. 10-19), and obeying God’s will (vv. 20-27).”

Knowing God’s Word (vv. 1-9):  “1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, 2 For I give you sound teaching; Do not abandon my instruction. 3 When I was a son to my father, Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother, 4 Then he taught me and said to me, "Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live; 5 Acquire wisdom! Acquire understanding! Do not forget nor turn away from the words of my mouth. 6 “Do not forsake her, and she will guard you; Love her, and she will watch over you. 7 “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding. 8 “Prize her, and she will exalt you; She will honor you if you embrace her. 9 "She will place on your head a garland of grace; She will present you with a crown of beauty.’”

As we look at the passage above we can see that Solomon was taught wisdom from His father, and Solomon had a wonderful father to teach him for David wrote many of the Psalms that also give us wisdom, and his name is mentioned many, many times in the OT and even the NT as he was a very important person for the cause of Christ.  Believers today can teach their children and also their grand-children many wonderful things about the Word of God, and about life, but it is up to the children and grand-children to accept what they are being taught.  We can see that from this passage that Solomon has a great desire for his son to learn wisdom from the Word of God.

Wisdom is seen as a beautiful loving woman and folly is seen as a prostitute who is around to tempt us with her beauty, but her beauty will cause great trouble for those who follow her.  Dr. Wiersbe writes on this subject the following, “In Proverbs, Wisdom is personified as a beautiful woman who invites us to her lavish banquet, while Folly is the adulterous or prostitute who temps us to poverty and death.  The one you love is the one who will control your life.  Embrace Wisdom and you will have security (4:6), honor (v8), and beauty (9).”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I believe that what can be learned from this section is that it is not enough to just read the Word of God, but to think about it, memorize it, and meditate upon it so that we can gain wisdom from it.  It is time consuming, but well worth it.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Continue to stay in God’s Word in order to continue to gain wisdom.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 121:1-4

1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains, from where shall my help come?  2 My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.  3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.  4 Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
