The First Marriage

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 01/25/2006

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  The First Marriage

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Genesis 2:21-25

Message of the verse:  “2  So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.
22 The LORD God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.  23  The man said, ‘This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.’  24  For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.  25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

These five verses give the account of the creation of the first woman and also the first marriage and all of this came about by the first operation which God gave to Adam.
I would like to make some quotes from Dr. Wiersbe’s book that I am using to help describe what these verses mean, for these verses that are being looked at are some of the most important verses in all of the Scriptures.  God ordained marriage and nothing has changed since that day.

“Matthew Henry wrote:  ‘She was not made out of the head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be  trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him, under his arm to be protected, and near his heart to be beloved.’  Paul wrote that ‘the woman is the glory of man’ (1Cor. 11:7, NIV); for if man is the head (1Cor. 11:1-16; Eph. 5:22-33), then woman is the crown that honors the head.”

Dr. Wiersbe gives four reasons for marriage:  1.  “God wanted suitable companionship for Adam, so He gave him a wife.”   2. “Marriage provides the God-given right to enjoy sex and have children.”  3. To encourage self—control, for ‘it is better to marry than to burn with passion.’”  4. Marriage is an illustration of the loving and intimate relationship between Christ and His church.”  Paul spoke of this as a great mystery which is now revealed to the church by God’s Holy Spirit.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  God has been bring the importance of relationships to my heart over these last couple of weeks, and this is another way that He is showing me the importance of relationships, and in this case the relationship between husband and wife, and this illustrates the relationship between Christ and the Church.  The is love and forgiveness in a relationship, for one does not have to perform in order to be loved and accepted, and I believe that if I can understand this principle of a relationship with my Heavenly Father then I will have a much better relationship with my wife.

The Word of God has been a great challenge to my heart as I read and studied His Word this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Continue to trust the Lord to work in my heart to cause me to conformed to the image of His dear Son, Jesus Christ.
