New Names (Gen. 32:29-32)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 02-21-2007

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  New Names

Bible Reading & Meditation                                   Reference:  Genesis 32:29-32

Message of the verses:  “29 Then Jacob asked him and said, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And he blessed him there.  30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, "I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been preserved."  31 Now the sun rose upon him just as he crossed over Penuel, and he was limping on his thigh.  32 Therefore, to this day the sons of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip which is on the socket of the thigh, because he touched the socket of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.”

In the previous verses Jacob was given a new name, and now Jacob asks the One who was wrestling with him His name, but does not get it from Him. Then Jacob renames the place where they were wrestling Peniel, which means the face of God, and it is still named that today.  As the sun began to rise Jacob left Peniel, but would he remember what he has learned there?

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  That seems to be the nagging question that I have each time I learn something new from God’s Word, will I begin to apply it to my life?  Many times it takes an extended period of time before I do this just as it did with Jacob.

The Word of God has been both challenging and also it has bee convicting to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Seek the Lord to continue to direct my path, and also to continue to teach me contentment.

Memory verses for the week:  Ecclesiastes 12:13 “The end of the matter; all has been heard.  Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Ecclesiastes 1:9 What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
