The Explanation of the Spirit's Coming (Acts 2:12-13)

SPIRITUAL DIAR FOR 7/16/2017 6:56 AM

My Worship Time                                                 Focus:  The Explanation of the Spirit’s Coming

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Acts 2:12-13

Message of the verses:  “12 And they all continued in amazement and great perplexity, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" 13 But others were mocking and saying, "They are full of sweet wine."”

When people hear the Word of God there are two different ways they can react to it, the first is that they accept it, while the second is that it is rejected.  We can see these two options in these two verses from Acts chapter two.  The one’s who asked “What does this mean” will soon find out as Peter will begin to preach the very first sermon in the Church age.

John MacArthur concludes this short section which is the last section from his commentary as we will begin to look at “The First Christian Sermon—Part 1 The Introduction: Explaining Pentecost” in our next SD.  “At the same time the others were mocking and saying, ‘they are full of sweet wine.’  Like the Pharisees who heard Jesus’ claims and saw the confirming miracles, but concluded He was of the devil (Matt. 12:24ff.), these scoffers rejected the evidence that this was a work of God.  Instead, the proposed the ridiculous hypothesis that the apostles were ‘full of sweet wine.’  They tried to explain away the miracle of speaking in languages as a drunken frolic.  Tragically, their skepticism was to harden into full-fledged opposition toward the message and the messengers (cf. 4:7ff.; 5:17-18, 40; 7:58-60).  However, no amount of opposition could stop the work of God that began at Pentecost.”  The church has surely has had its ups and downs, but the true church is always in the world since it began in Acts chapter two.  In our study of the book of Revelation we saw in chapter’s 2-3 seven letters to different New Testament Churches that were from the Lord Jesus Christ.  Many believe that these letters are listed in prophetic order as far as what the dominant church in the world will be like.  Those who take to this understanding have no problem with believing that we are in the Laodicean type of church at this time, and the good news is that is the last church written to.

Answer to yesterday’s Bible question:  “Murrian or animal pestilence” (Exodus 7:12).

Today’s Bible question:  “What should the Christian use to protect himself from Satan’s fiery darts?”

Answer in our next SD.
