Intro to Col. 2:11-15

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Intro to Colossians 2:11-15

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Colossians 2:11-15

            Message of the verses:  “11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.  13When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, 14 having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him.”

            John MacArthur entitles the chapter of his commentary that goes along with these verses “Complete in Christ,” and we will be talking about three aspects of how we are complete in Christ as we go throughout this section of verses.

            As I listened to most of the sermon from John MacArthur that he preached that goes along with these verses I listened to his introduction in which he went into the gospels to talk about the healings that Jesus did that are written about in the gospels.  He was making a point and when one takes a look at the healings that Jesus did they will find out that each healing that He did for a person or to a person caused the problem to be completely fixed after the healing was complete.  Perhaps you can see where this is heading, for when a person is saved from their sins, born again into the family of God it is done completely, and just as the people that Jesus healed did not need any other thing done for their healing as it was done completely, so a person who is saved through the work of Jesus on the cross they do not need any other thing to save them or to keep them saved.  As John the Baptist speaks of this in John 3:36 “"He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."”  John is saying that you are either saved or you not saved.  When you are married your are married and you don’t need anything else as far as being married because once you both say “I do” then you are married.

            MacArthur writes “Just as Jesus made people completely well when He healed physically, so also does He provide complete salvation when He heals spiritually.  That salvation does not need to be supplemented by false human philosophy or psychology, ritualism, mysticism, self-denial, or any other human work.  In Christ we ‘have been made complete’ (Col. 1:10; cf. 2 Pet. 1:3).  When a person comes to saving faith in Jesus Christ, ‘he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come’ (2 Cor. 5:17; cf. Gal. 6:15).”

            As mentioned we will be looking at three aspects of our completeness, as we have complete salvation, complete forgiveness, and complete victory.
