The Testimony of Orpah (Ruth 1:11-14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The testimony of Orpah

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Ruth 1:11-14

Message of the verses:  “11  But Naomi said, "Return, my daughters. Why should you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12  "Return, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to have a husband. If I said I have hope, if I should even have a husband tonight and also bear sons, 13  would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters; for it is harder for me than for you, for the hand of the LORD has gone forth against me." 14  And they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.”

As mentioned in yesterday’s SD Naomi should have given encouragement to both of her daughter-in-law’s and brought them back with her to the land of Israel where they could have continued to live in the presence of the Lord for the tabernacle was in Israel.  Naomi, according to Warren Wiersbe, was a back sliding believer and according to Psalm 66:18 the Lord would not hear her prayers.  Her daughter-in-law Orpah then turns and goes back to where she came from never to be heard from again in all the pages of Scripture.  Not the case with Ruth.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This story shows me the importance of leaning upon the Lord to direct my path.  Proverbs 3:5-6 make it clear how I am to make decisions in my life: “5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. 6  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust the Lord to guide my path and make them straight.
  2. Make sure that I ask the Lord to guide my path in order to do His will in my life.
