SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Grace pays the debt

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  2Kings 4:1-7

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Now a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD; and the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves." 2  Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil." 3  Then he said, "Go, borrow vessels at large for yourself from all your neighbors, even empty vessels; do not get a few. 4  "And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour out into all these vessels, and you shall set aside what is full." 5  So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons; they were bringing the vessels to her and she poured. 6  When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not one vessel more." And the oil stopped. 7  Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest.’”

When this chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on 2Kings began he wrote that there would be six miracles recorded in chapters three and four of 2Kings and they would show the grace of God, and this is the second miracle recorded.

It should be noted that the man of God was married and had a family, and that the man was in full time ministry with the sons of the prophets.  This section also shows that people who are in full time ministry for the Lord are not exempt from trials and difficulties.  This section also shows that there are many times in Scripture that God uses what the person has, and in this case the woman had a jar of oil, little in the hands of the Lord makes much, and it is also true that the Lord is the protector and provider of widows.

This miracle also shows me of the gracious forgiveness that the Lord Jesus Christ has given to me, for in the miracle it cost Elisha nothing to perform it, and in the miracle of the new birth it cost the person nothing, but it cost the Lord Jesus Christ His life to pay for my sins.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The phrase in verse six kind of jumped out at me as I read over this passage: “There is not one vessel more.”  At first I began to think in terms of money for the widow and her sons, that if she would have had another vessel it would have been better for her financially.  I think that the Lord had provided all that the woman needed to live on until her sons were able to help provide for the family.  What this means to me is that I must continue to have faith in the Lord as I walk with the Lord and not come up having no more “jars” to put my faith into.  It takes faith to be saved, which the Lord gave to me when I became His child, and it takes faith to live out my walk with the Lord, and I believe that if I listen to that still small voice of the Lord that my faith will continue to grow in order to continue to fill those “jars of oil.”

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Continue to trust the Lord to direct my path each day, including this day that He has given to me.

2.      I give myself to the Lord in light of what He has done for me for worship and for service.

3.      I must continue to remember that the battle is raging on and I need the spiritual armor on.

4.      I desire to continue to learn contentment.
