Hospitality (Heb. 13:2)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 07-24-03

My Worship Time                  Focus:  Hospitality

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 13:2

            1.  Message of the verse:  “2 Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”  (NASB)  “Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it!”  (NLT)

In yesterdays verse I saw love, and in the verse for today I see one of the outcomes of love and that is hospitality.  The writer reminds his readers that in the OT times people like Abraham and Sarah, and others have entertained angels, not even knowing who they were at first, but being hospitable to them just the same.  The word for angel is messenger, as Strongs says, “1) a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God.”  Dr. Wiersbe says that this could even mean that if we entertain people that they could be messengers of God to us.

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This is one of the areas that we as a family have not done all that we could have done, for there were times when we could have been entertaining people but did not do it.

The Word of God was convicting to my heart this morning and it also challenged me.

My Steps of Faith Today:  One thing that is on my heart is that at times I demonstrate a heart that is likened to a Pharisee.  At times because of pride I act like I know things that I do not know as well as I think I do.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 121:1-5

1.      I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From whence shall my help come?

2.      My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

3.      He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.

4.      Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

5.      The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade on your right hand.
