There Was Blood in the Old Covenant (Heb. 9:18-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04-23-04

My Worship Time                              Focus:  There was blood in the Old Covenant

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 9:18-20

Message of the verse:  “Therefore even the first covenant was not inaugurated without blood.  For when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, he took the blood of the calves and the goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, ‘THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD COMMANDED YOU.’”  (NASB)  “That is why blood is required under the first covenant as a proof of death.  For after Moses had given the people all of God’s laws, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with the water, and sprinkled both the book of God’s laws and all the people, using branches of hyssop bushes and scarlet wool.  Then he said, ‘This blood confirms the covenant God has made with you.’”

If you look at all the covenants that are in the Bible you will see that blood is used in all of them, including the covenant of marriage.  In the book of Exodus, the 24th chapter and verses 1-8 some of the things in these verses from Hebrews are told about.  However as John MacArthur says from his study Bible, “not all of the items listed in these verses are mentioned in the OT, and thus the writer of the Hebrews either got his information directly from the Lord or there was tradition that was written down and he got if from there.”  Either way it would seem to me that because the Holy Spirit is the One who gives direction to the writers of the Scriptures these things had to come from God.  I believe the important message from these verses is that all covenants have blood involved in them and that the blood of the old covenant was surely a picture of the blood of Jesus Christ that takes away sin.  Matthew 26:28 reads as follows, “for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It goes without saying that blood is important in the eyes of God.  It also goes without saying that blood is the life substance of all beings, and therefore when the Bible talks about the blood of Jesus Christ, I believe it is talking about the life of Jesus Christ.  Jesus Christ gave up that life in order for me to have eternal life, He gave up heaven to come to earth so that one day I will escape this sinful earth to go to His heaven and that is a truth that is well worth my time to ponder for all of eternity.

The Word of God was indeed refreshing to my soul today as I read and studied it.
