Planting, Worshiping, and Waiting (Gen. 21:33-34)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 09/21/2006

My Worship Time                                         Focus:  Planting, Worshiping, & Waiting

Bible Reading & Meditation                                          Reference:  Genesis 21:33-34

Message of the verse:  “33  And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.  34 And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines’ land many days.”

Dr. Wiersbe writes that the tree that was planted was called a tamarisk tree, and that it was part of the covenant between Abraham and Abimelech.  By having a well and some trees this would make a very nice oasis for future travelers and for Abraham and Sarah and Isaac was soon to be born.  And they all lived there for many days as verse thirty-four reads, it could have been as much as fifteen years.

Abraham must have also built an altar there to worship the Lord, for he called there upon the LORD, the everlasting God, which was a new name for the Lord.  This shows that Abraham and Sarah were beginning to grow in their faith, for this is the third name that Abraham has used for the LORD.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is important to continue to grow in my faith, because just as Abraham was about to go through the most severe test of his life in a few years as will be seen in chapter twenty-two, it was his continued growth in his faith in the Lord that will allow him to pass this test, and this is what I can take from these verses today.  The Lord has, and is still sending me through a test, and I want to pass this test and not fail the Lord.

The Word of God has been both refreshing and also a great challenge to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To continue to learn contentment, to continue to grow in my faith, and to continue to ask the Lord for grace, mercy, and direction each day.
