Abraham's Cave (Gen. 23:17-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 10-28-2006

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Abraham’s Cave

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Genesis 23:17-20

Message of the verse:  “17 So Ephron’s field, which was in Machpelah, which faced Mamre, the field and cave which was in it, and all the trees which were in the field, that were within all the confines of its border, were deeded over 18 to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the sons of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.  19 After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field at Machpelah facing Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.  20 So the field and the cave that is in it were deeded over to Abraham for a burial site by the sons of Heth.”

The word burry or some form of this work seems to be the key work in this chapter and as Dr. Wiersbe points out the Bible seems to teach that the believers in the OT along with those of the NT were buried and not burned.  Our Lord Jesus Christ was buried for three days and so this should be the way that believers should want to have done to them.

At the end of the book of Genesis this cave that Abraham had bought was quite full, but at the end of all four Gospel accounts there is an empty tomb and someday all the tombs will be emptied, and the tombs that housed believers will be raised to a new body and will live with the Lord Jesus Christ forever.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The hope of the believer, (me included) is the return of the Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore because He has conquered death and is coming again there is no fear in death, but the hope of raising again from the dead in a new form, just as the Lord Jesus Christ did.

The Word of God has been refreshing to me as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To continue living my life as though I am a stranger and an alien on this earth doing the things that the Lord Jesus Christ has for me to do each day.  To continue to seek to learn to be content in all phases of my life, and to continue to seek the direction of the Lord for my life each day.
