Christ a Living Sacrifice (Heb. 8:3)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                            Date:  04-02-03

My Worship Time                              Focus:  Christ a living sacrifice

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 8:3

            1.  Message of the verse:  “3 For every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices; hence it is necessary that this high priest also have something to offer.”  (NASB)  “And since every high priest is required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too.”  (NLT)

            Dr. Macarthur has pointed out in his verse note from Hebrews 5:1 that the term “gifts and sacrifices” probably is speaking of the same thing in the way that it is used in 8:3, & 8:4.  He gets this from the way that the Greek sentence is formed, which I am not sure that I understand it so I guess I will have to take his word on it.  I believe that the point of this verse is to say that Jesus Christ is our High Priest and that He is ministering from the tabernacle, which God made that, is in heaven.  Jesus does not have to continue to offer sacrifices for our sin, because He has already done that once for all upon the cross.  He is a living sacrifice as He ministers for us from the tabernacle in heaven.

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am not sure, but the term living sacrifice is use of believers in Romans 12:1,2.  It seems to me that because of what Jesus Christ has done for me on the cross that I cannot do anything to save myself, for His work accomplished that for me and was credited to my account when I trusted Him as my Savior and Lord.  Therefore I too am to be a living sacrifice in service to my Lord as a result of Him giving me salvation.

The Word of God has brought forth challenges for me today.

My Steps of Faith Today:  As I was reading my “Today in The Word” last night the author presented a challenge to me that I am to pray about over this month.  The challenge was this:  “In what way would you like to become more like Jesus?  Write it on a card or piece of paper, and make it part of your daily prayer focus this month.  Let’s see what God does in the next thirty days!”  As I was going to bed last night I was thinking of a way that I would like to become more like Jesus and there are many possibilities that I have come up with, but none that I have decided on.  I will trust the Lord to give me His wisdom for this answer.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 40:4-8

4.      How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

5.      Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which Thou hast done, And Thy Thoughts towards us; There is none to compare with Thee; If I would declare and speak of them they would be too numerous to count.

6.      Sacrifice and meal offering Thou hast not desired; My ears Thou hast opened; Burnt offering and sin offering Thou hast not required.

7.      Then I said, “Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me;

8.      I delight to do Thy will, O my God; Thy Law is within my heart.
