Levi Was in the Loins of Abraham (Heb. 7:9-10)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 03-18-03

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  Levi was in the loins of Abraham

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 7:9-10

Message of the verse:  “9 And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, 10 for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.”  (NASB)  “In addition, we might even say that Levi’s descendants, the ones who collect the tithe, paid a tithe to Melchizedek through their ancestor Abraham.  For although Levi wasn’t born yet, the seed from which he came was in Abraham’s loins when Melchizedek, collected the tithe from him.”  (NLT)

Paul used the same argument in Romans 5:12-14 to say that all of mankind sinned when Adam sinned that the writer of Hebrews gives here in saying that Levi and his offspring actually paid tithes to Melchizedek because when Abraham paid the tithes they were in the lions of Abraham.  This argument is based on seminal headship, and this is another argument the writer makes to show that the Melchizedekian priesthood was better than the Levitical priesthood.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This verse has made me think of something that is similar that Jesus Christ has done for me being the second Adam, and that is die on the cross to pay for my sins.  Just as I got my sin-nature from Adam when I was born, because I was in the loins of Adam when he sinned, so I received my new nature from Jesus Christ when he saved me in January of 1974.  Of this I did not deserve, for it was because of His great love for me, along with His mercy and grace, and I will be thankful throughout eternity.

The Word of God was very refreshing to me this morning as I studied it.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 40:1-5

1.      I waited patiently for the LORD; and He inclined to me and heard my cry.

2.      He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; And he set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

3.      And He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.

4.      How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

5.      Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which thou art done, And thy thoughts toward us; There is none to compare to Thee; If I would declare and speak of them, They would be to numerous to count.
