The Perfect High Priest (Hebrews 7:28)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 03-29-03

My Worship Time                                                           Focus: The Perfect High Priest

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Hebrews 7:28

Message of the verse:  “28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.”  (NASB)  “Those who were high priests under the Law of Moses were limited by human weakness.  But after the law was given, God appointed His Son with an oath, and His Son has been made perfect forever.”  (NLT)

The first part of this verse notes the weakness of the OT priests and the last part notes the perfection of Jesus Christ as High Priest.  The weaknesses have been noted in previous verses, and are such things as being human with all of its frailties.  The OT priest had to make an offering for himself on the Day of Atonement before he could make the sacrifice for the nation of Israel.  Whenever he sinned he also had to offer a sacrifice.  Jesus Christ is perfect and so He never had to offer a sacrifice for Himself before He offered Himself as a sacrifice for the sins of the world.  The last part of this verse speaks of His perfection and how it is forever.

I wish to add a quote from the John MacArthur Study Bible which actually comes from Hebrews 2:10 which reads “10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings.  The note has to do with the highlighted portion of this verse.  “Perfect:  In His divine nature, Christ was already perfect.  However, His human nature was perfected through obedience, including suffering in order that He might be an understanding High-Priest, an example for believers (cf. 5:8, 9; 7:25-28; 1 Peter 2:21), and established the perfect righteousness (Matthew 3:15) to be imputed to believers (2 Cor. 5:21; Php. 3:8, 19).”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I know because I still live in this body that I have problems with sinning, this is a fact of life.  However because I have such a perfect, sympathetic High Priest, who knows very well my weakness will forgive my sins and will also give me help to keep from sinning.

The Word of God has given encouragement to my heart as I read it this morning.  It has also challenged my heart to depend upon my Great High Priest.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I want to trust the Lord, as my wonderful sympathetic High Priest to give me the strength and the mind set to depend upon Him as we travel on our journey to Florida.  I pray He will keep us safe and help me to process correctly any anger from the things that happen on the road.  I also want to have the courage to believe that the Lord has the problems I face with IBS in His control, and will work them out for His glory, and my good.

Memory verses for the week:  Psalm 40:1-6

1.      I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry.

2.      He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; And He set my feet upon a rock making my footsteps firm.

3.      And He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear, and will trust in the LORD.

4.      How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

5.      Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which Thou hast done, And Thy thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with Thee; If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.

6.      Sacrifice and meal offering Thos hast not desired, My ears Thou hast opened; Burnt offering and sin offering Thou hast not required.
