The Promise of Internal Change (Heb. 8:10)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04-08-03

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  The promise of internal change

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  Hebrews 8:10

            Message of the verse:  “FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM UPON THEIR HEARTS. AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.”  (NASB)  “But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord:  I will put my laws in their minds so they will obey them.  I will be their God, and they will be my people.”  (NLT)

            This verse gives the message of salvation, and what happens to a sinner who has been saved by the blood of Christ.  The old covenant could not save people for it was powerless to do so, it was like looking into a mirror and seeing the imperfection, but the mirror having no power to change the imperfection, as it just shows the need for the change.  The New Covenant, however gets to the heart of the problem, for it gives a person a new heart, (2Peter 1:1-4); a new divine nature is given because the old one can never be corrected, thus the phrase “born again.”  The Lord says in this verse that He will write the laws upon the hearts of those who receive this New Covenant.  The problem with man all along is that he is born wrong, and the only way to correct this problem is to be born from above, and then he can understand the things that God will have him to do, and be able to live a life pleasing to God.

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Dr. Wiersbe says in his book, “Be Confident” that the phrase “fallen from grace” applies to this verse that I am studying today.  He says that a person who is saved through the New Covenant cannot then live his life by trying to obey the Old Covenant’s laws on his own, in his own power, thus the phrase “fallen from grace.”  The New Covenant is a covenant of grace, a person is saved by God’s grace and he then lives the Christian life by God’s grace.  This is a truth I always need to remember.

The Word of God was convicting and refreshing to my heart today.  It also has challenged my heart.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I want everyday to live the Christian life in the power of the Holy Spirit and not in my own power.

Memory Verses For the Week:  Psalm 40:4-9

4.      How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, and has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

5.      Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which Thou hast done, and Thy thoughts toward us; There is none to compare to Thee; If I would declare and speak of them, they would be too numerous to count.

6.      Sacrifice and meal offering Thou hast not desired; My ears Thou hast opened; Burnt offering and sin offering Thou has not required.

7.      Then I said, “Behold, I come; In the scroll of the book it is written of me;

8.      I delight to do Thy will of my God; Thy Law is within my heart.

9.      I have proclaimed glade tidings of righteousness in the great congregation; Behold, I will not restrain my lips, O LORD; Thou knowest.
