The Judgment of thier Reviling (2 Peter 2:12)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04/13/2004

My Worship Time                                                              Focus:  The Judgment of their Reviling

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  2 Peter 2:12

Message of the verses:  “12 But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed,”  “But these men, with no more sense than the unreasoning brute beasts which are born to be caught and killed, scoff at things outside their own experience, and will most certainly be destroyed in their own corruption (Phillips).”

We can see from both of these translations, (one paraphrased version), that Peter is describing these false teachers as being like unreasoning animals.  Animals do things by instinct as they lack the finer sensibilities that humans possess.  Later on at the end of this chapter Peter will picture them as pigs and dogs.  Jesus said “"Do not give what is holy to dogs, and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces (Matthew 7:6).”

What we see here is that these men are making a lot of noise about things that they know nothing about.  This is similar to what these “brute beasts” that Peter is talking about in this verse.  The truth is found in the Word of God and it is a shame that more people don’t take the time to seek the truth where it can be found.  I was listening to Proverbs this morning, chapter nine which speaks about wisdom.  Wisdom in chapter nine of Proverbs speaks like a person talking about how God used wisdom to create the earth.  We can be sure that these false teachers had little to no wisdom on the things they were talking about.  We can find the same types of false teaching going on today in our world, as some will come knocking on your door to petal their poison.

Dr. Wiersbe concludes “These ‘brute beasts’ are destined for destruction, a truth Peter mentioned often in 2 Peter 2 (vv. 3-4, 9, 12, 17, and 20).  As they seed to destroy the faith, they themselves shall be destroyed.  They will be ‘corrupted in their own corruption.’  Their very nature will drag them down into destruction, like the pig returning to the mire and the dog to its vomit (2 Peter 2:22).  Unfortunately, before that  even takes place, these people can do a great deal of moral and spiritual damage.”
