My Worship Time Focus:
The Seriousness of their Reviling
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 2 Peter 2:11
Message of the
verses: “11 whereas angels who are
greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before
the Lord.” “11 Yet even angels, who are
their superiors in strength and power, do not bring insulting criticisms of
such things before the Lord (Phillips).”
I think that we can better understand the meaning of this
verse when we look at it in the Phillips paraphrased Bible.
Dr. Wiersbe begins this section by stating “The angels
are reviled by the apostates, but the apostates are not reviled by the
angles! Even the angels, though greater
in strength and power, will not intrude into a sphere that is not their
own. The angels remember the rebellion
of Lucifer and know how serious it is to revolt against God’s authority. If God judged the rebellious angles, how much
more will He judge rebellious men!” As
always Dr. Wiersbe makes sense out of this difficult passage.
Dr. Wiersbe also states in his commentary that “The
suggestion here is that the godly
angels do not even speak against the fallen
angles. They have left all judgment to the
Lord.” Jude mentions more about this in
his letter which we will probably post onto this blog site sometime in the
future.
We can learn from this section that we are not to speak
evil of others even though they are doing wrong, for if the godly angles do not
speak badly of the fallen angles, but leave judgment to the Lord then as
believers we are not to speak badly of those that are doing wrong, but trust
that there is coming a day when what they are doing will be judged by the
Lord. “11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who
sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was
found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before
the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the
book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in
the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were
in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were
judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades
were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15
And if anyone’s name was
not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire
(Rev. 20:11-15).”
