My Worship Time Focus: Intro to 2 Peter 3:1-10
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 2 Peter
3:1-10
Message of the
verses: “1 This is now, beloved, the
second letter I am writing to you in which I am stirring up your sincere mind
by way of reminder, 2 that you should remember the words spoken beforehand by
the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your
apostles. 3 Know this first of all, that
in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their
own lusts, 4 and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever
since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning
of creation." 5 For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that
by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of
water and by water, 6 through which the world at that time was destroyed, being
flooded with water. 7 But by His word the present heavens and earth are being
reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. 8 But do not let this one fact escape your
notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a
thousand years like one day. 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some
count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but
for all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a
thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be
destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up.”
Dr. Warren Wiersbe entitles this chapter “Scoffing At The
Scoffers,” as this chapter in his commentary covers these ten very important
verses to which we will have the privilege to look at in the upcoming days.
While at our Wednesday evening prayer meeting and Bible
study there was a lady, young as most ladies are to me at my age, and she
stated that her neighbor’s kids came to play with her kids many times. She took the opportunity to talk to them
about creation that is found in the Bible.
She asked them if they have seen a Bible before and they replied that
they saw one on TV. This is very hard to
understand that our country has fallen so far that people don’t even have a
Bible in their homes.
This family was ignorant for lack of knowledge. Dr. Wiersbe quotes a famous philosopher who
he says was right in stating “Not ignorance, but ignorance of ignorance, is the
death of knowledge.” In the case of this
ladies neighbors this statement fits in very well, as it is the case with the
times we are living in, in the United States of America, a country whose laws
are based upon the Ten Commandments.
Peter is talking about the ignorance of people who do not
believe that the Lord Jesus Christ will return to planet earth, something that
is taught in both the Old and New Testaments.
The Millennial Kingdom is taught in the Old Testament but as far as the
length of it, this is only seen in the New Testament, in the book of
Revelation.
Dr. Wiersbe concludes his introductory comments with the
following paragraph: “How important it
is for us as Christians to understand God’s truth! Today we are surrounded by scoffers, people
who refuse to take the Bible seriously when it speaks about Christ’s return and
the certainty of judgment. In this
paragraph, Peter admonished his readers to understand three important facts
about God and the promise of Christ’s coming.”
I will now list these three important facts: “God’s Word is True (2 Peter 3:1-4), God’s
Word is Consistent (2 Peter 3:5-7), God’s Word is Merciful (2 Peter 3:8-10).”
