Live a Godly Life (2 Peter 3:11-14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY 05-03-04

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Live a godly life

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2 Peter 3:11-14

            Message of the verse:  “11 Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, on account of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! 13 But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.14 Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless.”   (NASB)  “11 In view of the fact that all these things are to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be? Surely men of good and holy character, 12 who live expecting and working for the coming of the day of God. This day will mean that the heavens will disintegrate in fire and the burning elements will melt, 13 but our hopes are set on new heavens and a new earth which he has promised us, in which justice will make its home.  14 Because, my dear friends, you have a hope like this before you, I urge you to make certain that the day will find you at peace with God, flawless and blameless in his sight.”(PHILLIPS)

            These four verses teach about the believer’s expectant attitude in his conduct as he looks for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.  It also teaches the believer to be a good wittiness in this dying world, and to keep himself clean so that when he is face to face with the Lord that he will receive a just reward for a job will done.  Peter is saying in verse eleven that because we as believers know that the world will one day be burned up, then we should live our lives in such a way that will please the Lord.  In verse twelve he writes about our wittiness to the dying world, and said that this can hasten the day of the Lord if we do this job well.  Dr. Wiersbe made a point about this subject in his commentary on 2 Peter.  He said that believer’s are not to get so caught up in the sovereignty of God that they become lazy.  The other extreme is to say that God cannot do anything without the help of believers.  The Scriptures seem to many times have a balance to them.

            Verse thirteen speaks of the hope, and the fact that it is set on the new earth, because God has promised to make a new earth, and it will be an earth where there will be perfect justice, for there will be no sin.  Verse fourteen is the verse that speaks to the fact that believer’s need to live a holy life doing the things that God would have us to do so that when we meet the Lord face to face then we will not be ashamed.  The letter to Titus teaches us that the hope of the believer is the coming of the Lord, and Peter is saying that in light of that hope we should have a good conduct, be a good wittiness so that we will not be ashamed at the coming of the Lord.

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I do believe that it is very clear that I am to live a life that is pleasing to the Lord while hear upon this earth, and that I am also to be a good wittiness because I am different since the Lord saved me, and that by doing these things I can eagerly look foreword to the coming of the Lord.

The Word of God has brought some big challenges to me as I read it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Trust in the Lord with all of my heart, and lean not upon my own understanding, in all of my ways I am to acknowledge Him, and He has promised to direct my path.  I am not to be wise in my own understanding, but I am to fear the Lord, so that I can depart from evil.

Memory verses for the week:  Proverbs 3:11-12 & 1Corthians 13:1

My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor detest His correction;

For whom the Lord loves He corrects, Just as a father the son in whom he delights.

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angles, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a changing symbol.
