PT-1 "Intro to Col. 1:15-19"

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 1/13/2017 11:39 PM

My Worship Time                                                                 Focus:  Intro to Colossians 1:15-19

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                Reference:  Colossians 1:15-19

Message of the verses:  “15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him,”

We have to understand that the Bible is a book about the Lord Jesus Christ, from first looking at the records in the Old Testament which tells us of the preparation of His first coming.  Then we look at the gospels which present Him as God come in human flesh as He came into the world to save sinners.  We move to the book of Acts where the message of salvation in Christ begins to be spread around the world.  In the letters of epistles we see the details of the theology of Christ’s work and also the personification of Christ in His body, the church.  Then finally the book of Revelation presents Christ on the throne as He reigns as King of kings and Lord of lords.

One of my very favorite parts of Scripture comes from the last part of the gospel of Luke as in the 24th chapter we see the resurrected Christ walking along with two of His followers who did not recognize who He was until He wanted them to, but before they recognized Him we read that “Beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, [Jesus] explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.”  I have to say that this was one sermon that I would have loved to have been there to listen to, but we surely learn that Jesus talked about how the Old Testament spoke of Him.

John MacArthur writes “But of all the Bible’s teaching about Jesus Christ, none is more significant than Colossians 1:15-19.  This dramatic and powerful passage removes any needless doubt or confusion over Jesus’ true identity.  It is vital to a proper understanding of the Christian faith.”

I ask that your read over these verses a few times and perhaps meditate on them for a while in order to understand the richness of these verses as they tell about who Jesus Christ is and then we will finish our introduction to these verses in our next SD.
