Genesis 1:3-5 "First Day of Creation"

01/02/2006

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  1st Day of Creation

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  Genesis 1:3-5

Message of the verse:  “3  Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.  4  God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.

5  God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.”

I would surmise that the question concerning verse three is where did the light come from when God did not create the sun until day four?  The best answer that I can come up with is that God was the One who was the light.  In the book of Revelations, which has a lot in common with Genesis, states that in the New Jerusalem God is the One who provides all of the light needed, and there will be no darkness there.  As stated before light represents God, and God’s goodness and righteousness as looked at in many Scripture passages, for Jesus said in the Gospel of John,  “Joh 8:12  Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life,’  Joh 9:5  ‘While I am in the world, I am the Light of the world.’”  As seen in this passage of John, (John 8:12) Jesus said that those who follow Him will not walk in darkness, or in sin.  Darkness is equated to sin in many Scripture passages.  In Genesis 1:4 Moses states that God separated the light from the darkness, and I do not think that it would be stretching this verse to far by saying one can look at in the way of separating righteousness for sin.

Verse three of Genesis tells the reader how God created things, and that can be seen by the phrase, “Then God said,” for in that phrase one can see that when God spoke things were created.  The phrase at the end of verse four, “and there was evening and there was morning, one day,” tells how the Jewish people counted there days, for the Jewish day begins in the evening, where most places begin a day at midnight.  The other thing here is that there is a number corresponding to the day, which makes it a 24 hour day and not some unknown period of time, like the day of the Lord.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It was God who planned to make the world, and when God has a plan there is nothing that will stop His plan, even though at times from my observation point here on planet earth it looks like there is someone or something that is thwarting God’s plans here for planet earth and also for my own life, but this is not the case.  Just as God had a plan when He created this earth, He also has a plan for my life, and I desire for Him to “direct my path” each and every day in order to work out this plan for my life.

The Word of God has challenged my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  As I begin this New Year I have some goals that I would like to accomplish and they can be summarized in a couple of passages from God’s Word:  “5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.  6  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”  Proverbs 3:5,6 and Philippians 4:11b.  In a sense this is a two part goal for as I yield to the Lord in all of my circumstances He has promised to direct my paths, and by doing this I believe that I will learn to be content.  This verse uses the word learn, so to be content is a learning process, and not something that you get in an instance.
