Seth: The Path to Messiah

03/09/2006

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                  Focus:  Seth the path to Messiah

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  Genesis 4:25; 5:1-5

Message of the verse:  “25 Adam slept with his wife again, and she gave birth to another son. She named him Seth, for she said, ‘God has granted me another son in place of Abel, the one Cain killed.’”

“1 This is the history of the descendants of Adam. When God created people, he made them in the likeness of God.  2  He created them male and female, and he blessed them and called them ‘human.’  3  When Adam was 130 years old, his son Seth was born, and Seth was the very image of his father.  4  After the birth of Seth, Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.  5  He died at the age of 930.”

As written before there are a lot of things that the book of Genesis does not cover, things like when all of the people were born and to whom they were born to.  In this section this is being discussed today there is another boy born to Adam and Eve and this boy will take the place of Able who is already dead.  Seth continues the godly line to whom the Messiah is born to, and this can be seen in the Gospel of Luke, for the genealogy that is written there goes from Jesus Christ all the way back to Adam. In Genesis 3:15 God promised to bring a Redeemer to the earth and as the OT unfolds God gives more detail about who the Messiah will be born to.  This is how Luke 3:38 ties in Seth with the Lord Jesus Christ’s birth:  “the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God.”

Many times in this book of Genesis the ungodly line will be given and then the godly line will be given, and perhaps the reason for this is because the godly line will be the one that will continue forever.

In verse 25 Adam says that he has a son born to him that will take the place of Able, so Adam knew that even though they must have had many children before Seth was born that Seth was the special on who would be in the line that God spoke of in Genesis 3:15.

In chapter 5 and verses 1-5 the genealogy of Adam is given from Adam to Seth, but verse four comments that Adam had other sons and daughters and then verse five tells that Adam died at the age of 930 years old.  There are some who would say that the ages of these early people in the history of the world were counted a different way, but I do not believe that at all, for before the flood people lived a long, long time in comparence  how long they lived after the flood, and I think for good reason.  Before the flood the Bible says that there was a wall of water that was above the earth and this wall of water came down as part of the flood which caused more direct sun light to come down on the earth and thus more of it’s harmful rays, and this is why many scholars believe that the life span of man dropped after the flood and why, for instance, Adam could live so long.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  One of the reason that I like to study the OT is that I can see God’s plan being worked out, the plan of the Messiah’s birth being made ready.  There is no one on this earth or any place else that can stop God’s plan and by reading and studying the OT I receive confidence that God has a plan for my life and that I can trust Him to show me this plan and to give me the strength to follow it.  There are many things in my life that I do not like, yet because of the confidence that I have from reading God’s Word I can trust God to work all of these things out for my good and for His glory.

The Word of God has been challenging and refreshing to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Continue to have confidence in the Lord that He will direct my path and also continue to teach me contentment.
