The Victory was not Saul's (1 Samuel 17:55-58)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  It wasn’t Saul’s victory

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  1Samuel 17:55-58

Message of the verses:  55  Now when Saul saw David going out against the Philistine, he said to Abner the commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is this young man?" And Abner said, "By your life, O king, I do not know." 56  The king said, "You inquire whose son the youth is." 57  So when David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul with the Philistine’s head in his hand. 58  Saul said to him, "Whose son are you, young man?" And David answered, "I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.’”
If Saul would not have sinned against the Lord those two times that he was suppose to have done battle for the Lord perhaps he would have been the one who would have gone out to defeat the Philistine giant and not David.  He had little trouble in allowing David to go out to face the giant as he stood back and watched, not knowing who David was or where he had come from. It must have been a bit embarrassing to him not even to know David’s name or who his family was.
I think that the sight that is described in verse fifty-seven must have been something as David goes to meet the king and still has the head of the Philistine in his hand, for he was not about to let this trophy of the Lord get away from him.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I have mentioned this a number of times while going through this portion of 1Samuel as to whether or not Saul was a true believer in the Lord to take care of his sins or perhaps he was, what Paul writes about, a carnal believer.  At any rate what I see from this section is a missed opportunity for Saul because he was not walking with the Lord, because he had very little faith in the Lord to conquer his fears.
I do not want to be like Saul and miss opportunities that the Lord has for me because of unbelief or fear as I want to walk closely with the Lord and have a strong faith that He is in control of all things.  I want to confess my sins to Him in order to have wonderful fellowship with Him all the days that He has given me to live on this earth.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       Psalm 139:23-24 come to mind this morning:  “23  Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24  And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.”
2.      Colossians 2:6 also come to my mind this morning:  “Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.”
