SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time:                                                                 Focus:  The second ‘three mighty men

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                Reference:  2Sam. 23:13-17; 1Chro. 11:15-19

Message of the verses:  “13  During harvest time, three of the thirty chief men came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14  At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15  David longed for water and said, "Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem!" 16  So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD. 17  "Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this!" he said. "Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?" And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.”

“15  Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while the army of the Philistines was camping in the valley of Rephaim. 16  David was then in the stronghold, while the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 17  David had a craving and said, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!" 18  So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; nevertheless David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD; 19  and he said, "Be it far from me before my God that I should do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went at the risk of their lives? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did.”

I am having a bit of trouble understanding what a drink offering represents in this case.  The best commentary that I have found here was that because these men risked their lives to bring David a drink from this well that the water now represented the blood of these men and therefore David did not think that he was worthy of drinking it and so he poured it out unto the Lord as a drink offering.  Paul spoke of himself being poured out as a drink offering two times in his letters and this is the only time in the NT that we find “drink offering” because when Jesus Christ died on the cross he fulfilled all of the OT sacrifices and therefore they did not need to me mentioned again because they were fulfilled.

These second three might men are not mentioned by name, but they were part of the thirty might men of David.  Dr. Wiersbe writes the following:  “God doesn’t measure us by what He helped other do but by what He wanted us to do with the abilities and opportunities He graciously gave us.”  Mother Teresa said:  “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am not to worry about trying to live up to things others do for the Lord, but I am to make sure that the things I do for the Lord are the things that He is leading me to do, and do them for the glory of the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.    Put on the spiritual armor.

2.    Trust the Lord to guide my path today.

3.    Be sensitive to the leading of the Lord and give glory to the Lord for allowing me to be led by Him.
