SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Adonijah the opportunist

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  1Kings 1:1-10

Message of the verses:  This main section has three sub-sections in it and I will attempt to go over all three of them this morning.  The first sub-section is called “The Occasion (Verses 1:1-4): “1 ¶  Now King David was old, advanced in age; and they covered him with clothes, but he could not keep warm. 2  So his servants said to him, "Let them seek a young virgin for my lord the king, and let her attend the king and become his nurse; and let her lie in your bosom, that my lord the king may keep warm." 3  So they searched for a beautiful girl throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 4  The girl was very beautiful; and she became the king’s nurse and served him, but the king did not cohabit with her.”

Adonijah was at this time the oldest of David’s sons and therefore probably though that he was the one who should be the next king even though it was known to him that the Lord had chosen Solomon to be the next king and to build the Temple of the Lord.

There was a young girl who is also part of this drama named Abishag who was a Shunammite, and who was very beautiful and was the one who kept the king warm by sleeping with him, yet not having any sexual relations with him.  She would fit into the drama after the death of David.

The Traitors” (Verses 1:5-7):  “5 ¶  Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, "I will be king." So he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen with fifty men to run before him. 6  His father had never crossed him at any time by asking, "Why have you done so?" And he was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom. 7  He had conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest; and following Adonijah they helped him.”

Adonijah is the son of David who will not try and become the next King of Israel and he did some things similar to what Absalom did to try and make this happen.  He has some men who were true to David with Him including Joab who was the leader of David’s army, and he also had Abiathar the pries, so he had both the priests and the army in his corner.

The Faithful:” (Verses 1:8-10): “8  But Zadok the priest, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei, Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. 9  Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and fatlings by the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel; and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah, the king’s servants. 10  But he did not invite Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, the mighty men, and Solomon his brother.”

This section of Scripture gives the names of the men who were not invited to Adonijah’s party and were therefore loyal to the King.  These will be the men who will not stand by idly and allow Adonijah’s plan to be fulfilled, for they knew that it was not the will of the Lord for it to be fulfilled.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I saw something similar happening, and is still happening, at GBC and therefore I could not stand to continue to go there anymore so I left and pray that God will judge these things that are going on there now.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Trust the Lord to judge the plans that are going on at GBC in a way that will bring glory to God.

2.      Put on the spiritual armor today so that I will be ready in the battle.
