Christ's Obedience (Heb. 5:8)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

                                                                                                Date:  02-15-03

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  Christ’s obedience

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Hebrews 5:8

            1. Message of the verse:  “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.”  (NASB)  “So even though Jesus was God’s Son, He learned obedience from the things He suffered.”  (NLT)

It was the desire of Jesus Christ, while He was on this earth, to obey His Father and to accomplish His will.  By doing this He had put Himself in subjection to His Father and thus part of Him doing His Fathers will was to learn obedience to Him.  Luke 2:52 says, “And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.”  Jesus was the perfect man, being God in human flesh, however He still had to learn things that all humans learn, things like obeying His earthly parents, learning the trade of being a carpenter.  “Because Jesus obeyed perfectly, even under great trial, He can help us obey, no matter how difficult obedience seems to be.”  (Life Application Bible note on this verse)

I want to relate something that seems to me goes along with this verse.  God created man, and then man sinned against God which brings evil into the world.  God says in Romans 8:28 that He causes all things to work together for good for those who love God.  God causes even evil things to be worked out for the good of those who love God.  Jesus Christ came to earth in a human body to make Himself a sacrifice for the sins of man.  In doing this He became obedient to His Fathers will even though He had to face evilness from man, and suffering from man to complete His obedience through this suffering.  It seems to me that Jesus Christ shows the truthfulness of Romans 8:28 through His obedience through His suffering.  I know that at times I wonder why God allows suffering in this world, but His Son went through more suffering than anyone else who ever lived and God used that suffering to bring about salvation to all those who will obey by believing He did that for them so this shows me that God’s love for me even spans my sin, which is something that He hates very much.

            2.  Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am the type of person that has to understand things before I buy into them, (so to speak.)  It seems to me that I have a better grasp on why humans suffer at times.  This life that I live here on this earth is the proving grounds of eternal life, and I would suppose that suffering has and will be part of it.  God used the sufferings of Jesus to bring about eternal life for me and He can use sufferings to bring about growth in my life to make me more like Jesus Christ.

The Word of God was very enlighting to me as I read it today.

My Steps of Today:  To trust the Lord with my life today and not to lean on my own understanding, in all my ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct my path.

Memory verse for the week:  Colossians 4:5

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.
