My
Worship Time Focus: Jesus Christ reveals
a superior sympathy (5:2 & 7,8)
Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: Hebrews 5:2
1. Message of the verse: “He can have compassion on those who are
ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also subject to weakness.” (NKJV)
“He can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself
also is beset with weakness.”
(NASB) “And because he is human,
he is able to deal gently with the people, though they are ignorant and
wayward. For he is subject to the same
weaknesses they have.” (NLT)
As I
stated in an earlier spiritual diary I want to follow the outline from “Be
Confident” by Warren Wiersbe as I go through the book of Hebrews. This section covers 5:2 and 5”7 & 8. In verse two the writer is speaking about the
priest in the Old Testament who was a descendent of Aaron. Two of the differences between the OT priests
and the priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ is 1) Jesus Christ is now in heaven
doing His duties as High Priest, and 2) Jesus Christ’s Priesthood is from the
order of Melchizedek who was a king and a priest before the law was given to
the children of Israel.
The Old
Testament priest was a man from the line of Aaron, and he was a sinner so he
could understand the sinfulness of mankind, however because of the
deceitfulness of sin there were times when these men had little sympathy for
other sinners. The story of Eli and his
sons in 1Samuel shows the truth of this.
The Old Testament priest was to deal gently with the people even though
they were ignorant and wayward. The word
translated for wayward in this verse means, “1a) to go astray, wander, roam
about,” as taken from Strongs Concordance.
The reason for this sympathy from the high priest is because he to is
human.
2. Spiritual meaning for my life today: The word sympathy comes up again in this
passage or at least the thought of it comes up.
The Lord Jesus Christ can have true sympathy when it comes to
ministering to His children from the standpoint of being the High Priest. As stated above sin can mare the believers
ability to have true sympathy as described in the Bible. I need this ability in my life and I do
believe that the Lord is convicting me of this and causing me to grow in this
area of my walk with Him.
The Word of God brought conviction to me as I read it
today.
My
Steps of Faith Today: I
am thankful that the check from Gary was without any problems and I am thankful
that Jim and I had a chance to talk yesterday about this whole situation. I am most thankful that my High Priest
understands my weaknesses and gives me comfort.
I would pray that the Lord would guide me to the book that He would have
us study with the men of our Bible study.
Memory verse for the week:
Colossians 4:5
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most
of every opportunity.
