SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus: Nathan the loyalist part one

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  1Kings 1:11-21

Message of the verses:  Today’s SD begins the second main point in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on 1Kings (Be Responsible) and I will attempt to cover the first two sub-points this morning.  I must say that it has been sometime since I have been doing my Spiritual Diary because of illness, but today I am blessed to feel well enough to continue on my journey through the Bible.

Nathan informed Bathsheba (verses 11-14)  “11 ¶  Then Nathan spoke to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, "Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king, and David our lord does not know it? 12  "So now come, please let me give you counsel and save your life and the life of your son Solomon. 13  "Go at once to King David and say to him, ’Have you not, my lord, O king, sworn to your maidservant, saying, "Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he shall sit on my throne"? Why then has Adonijah become king?’ 14  "Behold, while you are still there speaking with the king, I will come in after you and confirm your words."

At the outset of his commentary on this section Dr. Wiersbe goes over some things about what a great friend Nathan was to David.  David must have truly loved Nathan even though it was Nathan who confronted David after his sin with Bathsheba, for David named one of his sons Nathan and many believe that the lineage of Jesus Christ as far as Mary came through that son Nathan and Joseph’s came through Solomon.

Even though Bathsheba has not been heard from since the birth of Solomon does not mean that she did not know what was going on around the palace, for it was she that Nathan came to see once he heard that Adonijah was trying to take over the kingdom.  If he would have been successful then she and Solomon would surely been killed as seen in verses 12-13.

Bathsheba informed David: (Verses 15-21): “15  So Bathsheba went in to the king in the bedroom. Now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was ministering to the king. 16  Then Bathsheba bowed and prostrated herself before the king. And the king said, "What do you wish?" 17  She said to him, "My lord, you swore to your maidservant by the LORD your God, saying, ’Surely your son Solomon shall be king after me and he shall sit on my throne.’ 18  "Now, behold, Adonijah is king; and now, my lord the king, you do not know it. 19  "He has sacrificed oxen and fatlings and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. 20  "As for you now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 21  "Otherwise it will come about, as soon as my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be considered offenders.’”

Nathan has only given Bathsheba a few words to say to David, but she gave a very moving speech using the word “swear” in verses 13, 17, 29, and 30 of this text.  I think that the NASB translates the word vowed in verse thirty.

All that transpired between Bathsheba and David was heard by Abishag so there was a witness to what happened.  The intelligence and her faith in the Lord can be seen as she gives this speech to David, for after all it was a matter of life and death to her and her son Solomon.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  As I reflect on the recent days that I have gone through being in the hospital and looking at how the Lord put all of this together to work out for my good and for his glory I am so very thankful.  The Lord has my day’s numbered and he has given me things to do while here on this earth and I believe that part of that work that He has given to me was to be in the hospital and meeting up with Dr. Morris again. It does not make me happy that Dr. Ortiz did me wrong, but if the Lord will open the door to speak to Dr. Morris about His love and grace then it will all be worth it.

God had told David that Solomon was the next king of Israel and He was now using Nathan, Bathsheba to work out His plan.  God uses people to work out His plans and as stated above my prayer is that He will use me to talk to Dr. Morris about his soul.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.    Continue to trust the Lord with the events of my life each and every day that He gives me while here on this earth.

2.    Continue to realize that I am in a battle and need to be able to stand firm and this is done by the use of the spiritual armor.
