SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Baasha disobeys God

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  1Kings 15:32-16:7

Message of the verses:  “32  There was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. 33  In the third year of Asa king of Judah, Baasha the son of Ahijah became king over all Israel at Tirzah, and reigned twenty-four years. 34  He did evil in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin which he made Israel sin.

“1 ¶  Now the word of the LORD came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Baasha, saying, 2  "Inasmuch as I exalted you from the dust and made you leader over My people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam and have made My people Israel sin, provoking Me to anger with their sins, 3  behold, I will consume Baasha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 4  "Anyone of Baasha who dies in the city the dogs will eat, and anyone of his who dies in the field the birds of the heavens will eat." 5  Now the rest of the acts of Baasha and what he did and his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel? 6  And Baasha slept with his fathers and was buried in Tirzah, and Elah his son became king in his place. 7  Moreover, the word of the LORD through the prophet Jehu the son of Hanani also came against Baasha and his household, both because of all the evil which he did in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and because he struck it.”

It seems like the same story over and over again with these kings of Israel, for one takes over as king because he is punishing the former king for his sins and then he dies and his son takes over and is killed by the next king who is also evil.  Baasha was for twenty-four years and there is only a few sentences written about him, while David was king for forty years and there are four books written about him.  Baasha was evil like Jeroboam, and this also is a similar statement about the kings of Israel.

Elah is assassinated (1Kings 16:8-14).  “8  In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha became king over Israel at Tirzah, and reigned two years. 9  His servant Zimri, commander of half his chariots, conspired against him. Now he was at Tirzah drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza, who was over the household at Tirzah. 10  Then Zimri went in and struck him and put him to death in the twenty-seventh year of Asa king of Judah, and became king in his place. 11  It came about when he became king, as soon as he sat on his throne, that he killed all the household of Baasha; he did not leave a single male, neither of his relatives nor of his friends. 12  Thus Zimri destroyed all the household of Baasha, according to the word of the LORD, which He spoke against Baasha through Jehu the prophet, 13  for all the sins of Baasha and the sins of Elah his son, which they sinned and which they made Israel sin, provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their idols. 14  Now the rest of the acts of Elah and all that he did, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?”

Baasha was told by a prophet name Jehu that he would be die and his family would all be killed and so when his son Elah became king he began to drink a lot and was killed while he was drunk by one of his commanders name Zimri and then Zimri becomes king and kills all of Baasha’s family like Jehu the prophet told his father.  Dr. Wiersbe points out the following:  “But it must be pointed out that a person who fulfills divine prophecy is not innocent of sin.”  This statement holds true for many of the kings of Israel.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Don’t do evil in the sight of the Lord for all sin is against the Lord.  Don’t drink to such an excess that you get drunk.

It must be pointed out that the nation of Israel was a wealthy nation, but an evil nation, similar to the US at this time in her history.  It is too bad that we can’t learn from history.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.

2.      Continue to learn contentment.

3.      Let the Lord guide my path today.

4.      Remember that I am in a battle and in need of the spiritual armor.
