SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Elijah meets King Ahab

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  1Kings 18:17-19

Message of the verses:  “17 ¶  When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is this you, you troubler of Israel?" 18  He said, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals. 19  "Now then send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, together with 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.’”

In the KJV Elijah is called a troublemaker by Ahab, and this is the same thing that Jesus was called and also Paul the apostle so it seems that Elijah is in really good company.  The fact is that none of the three were troublemakers and in the case of Elijah it was the king who was the troublemaker because he was not following the commandments of the Lord, for he was worshiping the Baals.

Elijah tells the king to bring all Israel and all the prophets of Baal and also the prophets of the Asherah to come to Mount Carmel, for this was according to the Word of the Lord as seen in verse thirty-six of this chapter.  Elijah was not making this entire story up, but obeying what the Lord had told him to do.

Mount Carmel was near the border of Israel and Phoenicia, so this was a good place for the Phoenician god Baal to meet Jehovah, the God of Israel.  Now Elijah had invited the 400 prophets of the Asherah to come too, but they did not show up.  Asherah was the female or wife of Baal.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It took a lot of courage on Elijah’s part to do what he did in confronting Ahab.  The Lord had prepared Elijah to do this task for His glory, and it will take more courage for Elijah to confront the prophets of Baal, but the Lord will give him the strength to accomplish what He had given Elijah to do.  The Lord will also give me the strength to accomplish what He has called me to do here in Kauai, for my job is physically hard on me, but He will strengthen me in order for me to stay here, and through it all I hope that I will bring glory to the name of the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Continue to learn contentment.

2.      Remember that I am in a spiritual battle and in need of the spiritual armor to be put on and used today.

3.      Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.

4.      Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
