PT-1 "Sodom and Gomorrah" (2 Peter 2:6, 9b)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04/03/2004

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  PT-1 Sodom and Gomorrah

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2 Peter 2:6, 9b

Message of the verses:  “6 and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; 9b and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the Day of Judgment,”

First of all we want to see what God’s opinion is on the people in these cites is “Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD.”  In Genesis chapters 18-19 we see the judgment that God put on these cities.  Jude 7 says “7  just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.”

This all happened before the Law of Moses was given to the people of Israel, but it was surely against what the Lord hand in mind for people to do, and so it is just as wrong today as it was in that day.  One can see a preview of what would happen earlier in the book of Genesis as one of Noah’s son’s committed homosexual sex with his father and Moses then cursed his grandson because of this act, and it is believed that his grand-son was not even born yet.  The descendants of “24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said, "Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants He shall be to his brothers’ (Genesis 9:24-25).”

Dr. Wiersbe writes “The flagrant sin of Sodom and the other cities was unnatural sex, sodomy, or homosexual behavior, a sin that is clearly condemned in Scripture (Lev. 28:22; Rom. 1:24-27; 1 Cor. 6:9).”  “22  ’You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”  “24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.”  “9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals.”

We will look at a conclusion from the pen of Warren Wiersbe in our next SD from these examples that Peter wrote in the verses we have been looking at in our next SD.  8/30/2017 9:24 AM
