PT-5 Faith Results in Spiritual Growth (2 Peter 1:5-7)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 8/11/2017 10:07 PM

My Worship Time                                                  Focus:  PT-5 Faith Results in Spiritual Growth

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                 Reference:  2 Peter 1:5-7

            Message of the verses: “5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6  And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.”

            The word in the Greek for “brotherly kindness” is Philadelphia and of course we have a major city in the United States called Philadelphia and it is called the city of brotherly love.  Dr. Wiersbe reports that Peter must have gotten this virtue the hard way, as we probably already know the disciples seemed to have some arguments when they walked with Jesus, especially Peter.

            If we love Jesus we must practice an “unfeigned [sincere] love for the brethren (1 Peter 1:22 states).”   Hebrews 13:1 “Let love of the brethren continue.”  Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor.”  1 John 5:1-2 “1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments.”

            Lastly in our verses for today we see the word “charity” in the KJV, but “love” in the NASB.  If we are to grow in the Lord we must have more than brotherly love as verse seven makes clear.  The love that Peter is writing about here is “Agape” love.  “1) (Singular) brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence {#Joh 15:13 Ro 13:10 1Jo 4:18 }

1a) Of the love of men to men; esp. Christians towards Christians which is enjoined and prompted by their religion, whether the love be viewed as in the soul or expressed {#Mt 14:12 1Co 13:1-4,8 14:1 2Co 2:4 Ga 5:6 Phm 5,7 1Ti 1:5 Heb 6:10 10:24 1Jo 4:7 Re 2:4,19 } etc.

1b) Of the love of men towards God {#Lu 11:42 Joh 5:42 1Jo 2:15 3:17 4:12 5:3 }

1c) Of the love of God towards man {#Ro 5:8 8:39 2Co 13:14 }

1d) Of the love of God towards Christ {#Joh 15:10 17:26 }

1e) Of the love of Christ towards men {#Joh 15:8-13 2Co 5:14 Ro 8:35 Eph 3:19 }”

            Dr. Wiersbe writes that “it is impossible for fallen human nature to manufacture these seven qualities of Christian character.  They must be produced by the Spirit of God.  To be sure, there are unsaved people who possess amazing self-control and endurance, but these virtues point to them and not to the Lord.  They get the glory.  When God produces the beautiful nature of His Son in a Christian, it is God who receives the praise and glory.”

Looks like we have one more SD on these verses.
