My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Worshiping in the Spirit

            Message of the verse:  10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, (AV) 10 It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshiping in the Spirit. Suddenly, I heard a loud voice behind me, a voice that sounded like a trumpet blast.  (NLT) 

            There are some very interesting things that are in this verse that need to be looked at more fully.  John writes that he was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day.  John was, as the NLT has, was worshiping the Lord in the Spirit, he was “in” the Spirit, or the Spirit had complete control of John as he worshiped the Lord.  The word “in” means:  “a primary preposition denoting (fixed) position (in place, time or state).”  I believe that, according to this definition given, that John was in a state of the Holy Spirit, and that he was worshiping the Lord in that state.  John goes on to say that it was the Lord’s day, and that day is Sunday, the day that Christ was raised from the dead, and the day that the Church as been meeting for public worship of the Lord since the early days of the Church.

            John describes the voice of Jesus that he heard as a voice like a trumpet blast.  This voice must have certainly gotten John’s attention, and he was ready to listen.  When the Lord returns to receive His bride, the Church, there will also be a trumpet blast as Paul described in 1Thes. 4:13-18.

 

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This phrase “in the Spirit,” has always been somewhat of a mystery to me, and after studying this verse again it seems to me that John was worshiping the Lord in the state of the Holy Spirit, in other words, the Holy Spirit had complete control of him as he was worshiping the Lord on that Sunday morning back when the Lord appeared to him to give him the words of the precious letter.  The thing that I can take away from this is that the corporate worship of the Lord on Sunday is something that is very serious to the Lord, and something that I believe the Holy Spirit wants to be in control of.

 

The Word of God brought conviction to my heart as I read His Word this morning.

 

My Steps of Faith Today:  To have a strong desire to be “in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day.”
