Abraham Ministered to the Lord (Gen. 18:1-8)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 08-30-2006

My Worship Time                                                 Focus:  Abraham ministered to the Lord

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Genesis 18:1-8

Message of the verse:  “1 Now the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, while he was sitting at the tent door in the heat of the day.  2  When he lifted up his eyes and looked, behold, three men were standing opposite him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth, 3 and said, ‘My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.  4  ‘Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree; 5 and I will bring a piece of bread, that you may refresh yourselves; after that you may go on, since you have visited your servant.’ And they said, ‘So do, as you have said.’ 6 So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, ‘Quickly, prepare three measures of fine flour, knead it and make bread cakes.’ 7 Abraham also ran to the herd, and took a tender and choice calf and gave it to the servant, and he hurried to prepare it.  8 He took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and placed it before them; and he was standing by them under the tree as they ate.”

As chapter eighteen begins Abraham is found taking his afternoon nap near his tent because it is very hot in the afternoon in the Middle East where he was living.  Abraham sees three strangers approaching and jumps to his feet in order to serve them.  Now it was usual for people to be traveling in the heat of the day, however this heat did not detour Abraham from serving these strangers.  Abraham did not know who his guests were, but they were the Lord Jesus Christ, and two of His Angels coming to visit Abraham, so Abraham was serving the Lord.  The Bible says we are to minister to the Lord first.  Col. 3:23-24 “23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.”
1.     Abraham served his three guests personally, and this can be seen in this section.
2.     He ministered to the Lord immediately.
3.     He ministered to the Lord speedily.
4.     He served the Lord generously.
5.     His service was marked with humility.
6.     He served the Lord cooperatively.

Because of our modern society of hotels and motels and restaurants Christian hostility is not what is once was when the Church began, and because of this believers are missing out on some wonderful times.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The thing that hit home with me today is that everything that I do must be done as to the Lord, which comes from the verse in Colossians that was quoted above.  To minister to the Lord first, seems almost like worshiping the Lord 24/7.

The Word of God has brought conviction to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To be taught contentment by the Lord in my life, and to seek to follow His direction, and to minister to the Lord first and thereby minister to others.
