"Fear Not" (Gen. 15:1)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 06-07-2006

My Worship Time                                                                                      Focus:  Fear Not

Bible Reading & Meditation                                           Reference:  Genesis 15:1

Message of the verse:  1 After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, ‘Do not fear, Abram, I am a shield to you; Your reward shall be very great.’
I suppose that this is one of the verses in the Scriptures that I just kind of read and not really thought too much about before, but Dr. Wiersbe brings out some very wonderful points in commenting on this verse.

This is the first time in Scripture that the words “the Word of the LORD came to,” and in this case it was Abraham.  There will be many more times that this phrase is used and thus God will speak many times to people in the OT in this way.

God says to Abraham, “Do not be afraid,” and if God said this to Abraham it can be assumed that Abraham was indeed afraid, and perhaps he was afraid of having these kings that he defeated to come back and attack him, but at any rate there was fear in Abraham’s life.  It is also possible that Abraham was thinking about all of the riches that he had given up after the battle, perhaps he was having second thoughts about them.

The answer to Abraham’s fear, and for that matter for anyone’s fear is God, and God tell Abraham that He is a shield to Abraham and that He too is the One who will reward Abraham and that reward will be very great.  I believe that God’s reward was in two parts for Abraham, and that would be here on earth and also a great reward in heaven.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  There is a song that I have been listening to that the Lord has used in my life that speaks about trusting God in the storm, and even praising God in the storm.  “I will praise Him in the Strom,” is a song that was written and is sung by “Casting Crowns,” which is a very popular commentary Christian singing group.  Trusting God in the storm is not easy, but is seems to be necessary in the walk of the Christian in order to bring growth in his life.

The Word of God has been very refreshing to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  To continue to trust and praise the Lord in the storms that I am going through at this point of my life.
