SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  David formed political alliances

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  2Sam. 5:11-16; 1Chron. 3:5-9; 14:1-7

Message of the verses:  “11 ¶  Then Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees and carpenters and stonemasons; and they built a house for David. 12  And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel. 13  Meanwhile David took more concubines and wives from Jerusalem, after he came from Hebron; and more sons and daughters were born to David. 14  Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15  Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16  Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.
“5  These were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon, four, by Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel; 6  and Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, 7  Nogah, Nepheg and Japhia, 8  Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet, nine. 9  All these were the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines; and Tamar was their sister.
“1 ¶  Now Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David with cedar trees, masons and carpenters, to build a house for him. 2  And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted, for the sake of His people Israel. 3  Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David became the father of more sons and daughters. 4  These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5  Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6  Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7  Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.”
There is one verse in all of this Scripture that seems to me to be the most important verse and that is verse 12:  “12  And David realized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that He had exalted his kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.”  I see in this verse that David realized that the Lord chose him to do something special in the nation of Israel, and for the nation of Israel, and also that it was God who was doing the work to exalt the kingdom of Israel.
I also see that David is still on his way up in trusting the Lord to continue to accomplish things through David and this will continue until David seems to get board and decides to stay home when there were still battles to fight.
The alliance that David made with Hiram king of Tyre was a good one for Hiram, for this would protect him and continue to give him access to the sea without fear of being attacked by Israel.  Latter on Tyre would grow prideful and have to be disciplined by the Lord.
Both David and his son Solomon broke the law of having multiple wives and this was surely part of their downfall as they would have many family problems to contend with because of having many wives.  Jacob had experienced these problems too, but it doesn’t seem that either David or Solomon had paid any attention to this part of the life of Jacob to learn from it.  Both David and Solomon were descended from Jacob’s wife Leah who was Jacob’s first wife even though he was tricked into marrying her.  When God is not allowed to rule in our lives he will then overrule because God’s plans will prevail even when we disobey His Law.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The Bible makes it clear that believers today are both kings and priests and so I have to believe this is true of me.  I realize that the human nature in me makes me want to think of David’s sin with Bathsheba when I think of David, yet I need to think of the fact that God said of David that he was a man after My own heart and learn from his life why this was true so that I too can be a man after God’s heart.  If I am to be blessed like David I need to learn to live like David lived and have a heart like David had.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Give myself to the Lord for worship and service today.
2.      Trust the Lord to search my heart for unconfessed sin in order for me to deal with it.
3.      Continue to learn contentment through the trials that I am going through.
4.      Continue to help my wife grow spiritually.
5.      Continue to realize that I am in a battle and that I have an enemy and that I need to be protected by the spiritual armor: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
