SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                  Focus:  Enriching Mephibosheth

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2Samuel 9:9-13

Message of the verses:  “9 ¶ Then the king called Saul’s servant Ziba and said to him, "All that belonged to Saul and to all his house I have given to your master’s grandson. 10  "You and your sons and your servants shall cultivate the land for him, and you shall bring in the produce so that your master’s grandson may have food; nevertheless Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall eat at my table regularly." Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants. 11 Then Ziba said to the king, "According to all that my lord the king commands his servant so your servant will do." So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table as one of the king’s sons. 12 Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Mica. And all who lived in the house of Ziba were servants to Mephibosheth. 13 So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem, for he ate at the king’s table regularly. Now he was lame in both feet.”

The story of Mephibosheth continues in these remaining verses of chapter nine of 2Samuel, and the story also continues on how these verses relate to believers in Jesus Christ as this pictures some of the things believers have in Jesus Christ.  David, a man after God’s heart, told Ziba that all of the lands that belonged to Saul now belonged to Mephibosheth and he and his sons and his servants were to tend the land and sell the crops, but Mephibosheth would now be eating at the kings table in Jerusalem.
Some of these things picture what believers have in Christ, for Mephibosheth called himself a dead dog and according to Eph. 2:1-6 we were “dead” in trespasses and sins when Jesus called us and gave us new life.  Now our position is higher than that of Mephibosheth for we sit on the throne with Jesus and will reign with Him.  “For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:17).  As believers we have unsearchable riches in Christ Jesus as seen in Ephesians 3:8.  One day we will live in the New Jerusalem as seen in Hebrews 12:22-24.
There is one more thing that David did for Mephibosheth and that happened in the 21st chapter of 2Samuel and it had to do with David protecting him when after a famine in the land the Lord revealed to David it was because of how Saul tried to kill off all of the Gibeonites who were protected by a covenant that was made between Joshua and them.  David had to give them seven relatives of Saul whom they would hang, but David refused to give them Mephibosheth.  The application is seen for believers in Romans 8:1 “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  What I have learned in this passage or should I say what I am reminded in this passage is that I need to remember the promises that I make and keep them.  The covenant that Joshua made with the Gibeonites should not have been made with them as he was fooled by them, however the Lord remembered that covenant that Joshua made with them and honored it. Keeping promises made is important to the Lord and therefore is important to me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Remember always to keep my word.
2.      Continue to work on have all of my thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.
3.      Give myself to the Lord this Lord’s Day for worship and service.
4.      Trust the Lord to give me wisdom in order to help Bruce show Greg that GBC is going in the wrong direction.
