SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  What the covenant means to believers

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  2Samuel 7:18-29

Message of the verses:  “18 ¶  Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD, and he said, "Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19  "And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord GOD. 20  "Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord GOD! 21  "For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know. 22  "For this reason You are great, O Lord GOD; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23  "And what one nation on the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people and to make a name for Himself, and to do a great thing for You and awesome things for Your land, before Your people whom You have redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, from nations and their gods? 24  "For You have established for Yourself Your people Israel as Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, have become their God. 25  "Now therefore, O LORD God, the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house, confirm it forever, and do as You have spoken, 26  that Your name may be magnified forever, by saying, ’The LORD of hosts is God over Israel’; and may the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27  "For You, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, ’I will build you a house’; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You. 28  "Now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant. 29  "Now therefore, may it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You. For You, O Lord GOD, have spoken; and with Your blessing may the house of Your servant be blessed forever.’”

Dr. Wiersbe writes the following at the end of his commentary on this section:  “In his humility, faith, and submission to God’s will, David is a good example for us to follow.”  And at the beginning of his commentary he writes:  “We have already noted that there is a church today because God used David’s family to bring the Savior into the world, and there is a future for Israel because God gave David a throne forever.”  This in a nutshell is what the covenant means to believers today, but there is more from this section that I wish to comment on.

This is an unconditional covenant that God gave to David and all David had to do was to accept it which he did.

Breaking this section down there are three things that Dr. Wiersbe points out that are very meaningful in this section.  David first focused in on the present and what this covenant meant to him and he gives praise to the Lord for His great mercy and this can be seen in verses eighteen to twenty-one.  There is much beautiful praise to the Lord in this whole section.

The next section, verses twenty to two-twenty-four David brings up the past and how God had chosen Israel to be his nation and God did this because He wanted to, and even though God is God of all the nations Israel is special to Him even though Israel disobeyed God and served idols for many years.

The third part focuses in on the future and this covers verses twenty-five to twenty-nine.  This section kind of reminds me of the ninth chapter of Daniel where Daniel is reading from the 25th chapter of Jeremiah concerning what God was about to do for Israel and then Daniel begins to pray that this would be done just as God said it would be done, and this is what David is saying in this section.  David is very humbled by all of this and even though he is disappointed that he is not the one to build the temple he still praises the Lord for the house that God will build for David which will end with the birth of Jesus Christ the Messiah.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am looking at all of the praise that David gives to the Lord for this wonderful thing that God did for David and for his descendants and am ashamed that I do not praise the Lord more for the wonderful things that He has done for me, and it is all because of his mercy and grace.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      I want to praise the Lord for His wonder grace and for His wonderful mercy, and because of that for His wonderful salvation that He has given to me and without that I would be spending eternity in HELL.
