What the Covenant meant to David (2 Samuel 7:1-9)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  What the covenant meant to David

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  2Samuel 7:1-9

Message of the verses:  “  1 ¶  Now it came about when the king lived in his house, and the LORD had given him rest on every side from all his enemies, 2  that the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells within tent curtains." 3  Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all that is in your mind, for the LORD is with you."
4 ¶  But in the same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, 5  "Go and say to My servant David, ’Thus says the LORD, "Are you the one who should build Me a house to dwell in? 6  "For I have not dwelt in a house since the day I brought up the sons of Israel from Egypt, even to this day; but I have been moving about in a tent, even in a tabernacle. 7  "Wherever I have gone with all the sons of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the tribes of Israel, which I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ’Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’"’ 8  "Now therefore, thus you shall say to My servant David, ’Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people Israel. 9  "I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a great name, like the names of the great men who are on the earth.”

This SD begins chapter four in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on the books of 2Samuel and 1Chronicles.  He entitles this chapter “David’s Dynasty, Kindness, and Conquests,” and it covers chapters 7-10 of 2Samuel and chapters 17-19 of 1Chronicles.  I truly enjoy studying the two books together because one is an historical view and one is a view from the priests.  Chapter seven is about the Davidic Covenant even though it is not mentioned as a covenant until chapter twenty-three where it is written, “"Truly is not my house so with God? For He has made an everlasting covenant with me, Ordered in all things, and secured; For all my salvation and all my desire, Will He not indeed make it grow?”
David had it in his heart to build a House for the Lord, yet David did not get to do this task that he deeply desired to do.  David’s son Solomon would be the one who would do this.  Dr. Wiersbe points out a verse in 2 Cor. Which is actually speaking about giving to help his readers understand what was going on in David’s heart, and also can go on in my heart:  “The important thing is to be willing to give as much as we can—that is what God accepts, and no one is asked to give what he has not got.”
David had vowed to the Lord that he would build Him a temple and this can be seen in Psalm 132:1-5.  “1 ¶  «A Song of Ascents.» Remember, O LORD, on David’s behalf, All his affliction; 2  How he swore to the LORD And vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob, 3  "Surely I will not enter my house, Nor lie on my bed; 4  I will not give sleep to my eyes Or slumber to my eyelids, 5  Until I find a place for the LORD, A dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.’”
This is the first time that the prophet Nathan is mentioned in the Scriptures and he was a very important person in the life of David.  Nathan was the one who came and spoke to David about his sin with Bathsheba and he is the one who would make sure that Solomon was crowned king after David.  David had four children by his wife Bathsheba as recorded in 1Chronicles 3:1-5, and I am not sure if this takes into account the one who died, but at any rate there are a couple of things that are interesting to me as I read about David’s sons with Bathsheba, the first is that Solomon was not the first born after the child that died, and the second is that one of his sons by her is named Nathan.  I have read that the line of Mary, the mother of Jesus, came through the line of Nathan, and Joseph came through the line of Solomon.  Also the name mentioned in 1Chronicles 3:5 is Bath-shua, which Dr. Wiersbe points out that scholars concur is Bathsheba.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  What I seen in this section is the heart of David being in the right place and this was seen from the passage that was mentioned in 2Cor. about giving to the Lord.  I want my desires to all be godly, not making up some false desire to try and please the Lord, but allow the Holy Spirit to give me desires that will be pleasing to the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.      Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
2.      Trust the Holy Spirit to show me any unconfessed sin in order to confess it and repent of it.
3.      Put on the Spiritual armor to be protected from the wiles of the enemy.
4.      Continue to learn contentment.
5.      Trust the Lord to guide my path this morning.
