SPIRITUAL DIARY
My
Worship Time Focus: Ahithophel took his own life
Bible
Reading & Meditation Reference: 2Samuel 17:23
Message of the verse: “23 Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel
was not followed, he saddled his donkey and arose and went to his home, to his
city, and set his house in order, and strangled himself; thus he died and was
buried in the grave of his father.”
After
reading this verse one would suppose that it was because the counsel of
Ahithophel was not followed that his feelings were so badly damaged that he
hung himself, but that is not the case.
Ahithophel became a bitter and vengeful man after David had slept with
his granddaughter Bathsheba and then David killed her husband Uriah to cover up
the fact that Bathsheba was with child.
Ahithophel was biding his time in order to get back at David and he
probably decided to put in with Absalom long before this coup took place. After Absalom took the advice of Hushai
Ahithophel knew that this was going to fail and so he knew that King David
would be returning and then he would be either banned from the kingdom or
killed so he decided to hang himself.
This
is a reminder of what Judas did after he was paid thirty pieces of silver to
have Jesus taken into custody and later crucified. Ahithophel was a friend of David whom he had
eaten with just as Judas was a friend of Jesus whom He ate with and then turned
against Him. There are a number of
Psalms that David wrote that speak of what it probably was that Ahithophel did
to him and are quoted in the NT to show what Judas did to Christ.
Spiritual meaning for my life today: Ahithophel was trying to take justice into
his own hands and did not leave judgment and vengeance to the Lord as he should
have for the Lord was dealing with David after he sinned with Bathsheba, but
Ahithophel could not let it go.
I
realize that there are many problems that Greg Whiting is causing at GBC and
that he lied about me, which is surely sin, and yet I have to have confidence
in the Lord that He will judge what is going on by him there and not become
revengeful and try to handle it own my own for that would leave me bitter and
angry and unusable by the Lord. I don’t
want that to happen so I must be content to leave this in the wonderful capable
hands of the Lord and even when the Lord begins to work in the life of Greg and
has things happen like him wrecking his car I cannot be happy about this for
that too would be the wrong attitude to have.
My
Steps of Faith for Today:
1. “All
of us need to pray that the Lord will help us to end well.”
2. Trust
the Lord to work out the details of our job in Hawaii and find a place for our
dog.
3. Be
thankful that my sins have been paid for at the cross.
