SPIRITUAL DIARY
My Worship Time Focus: Hushai won Absalom’s confidence
Bible Reading & Meditation Reference: 2Samuel 16:15-19
Message
of the verses: “15 ¶ Then Absalom and all the people, the men of
Israel, entered Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him. 16 Now it came about when Hushai the Archite,
David’s friend, came to Absalom, that Hushai said to Absalom, "Long live
the king! Long live the king!" 17
Absalom said to Hushai, "Is this your loyalty to your friend? Why
did you not go with your friend?" 18
Then Hushai said to Absalom, "No! For whom the LORD, this people,
and all the men of Israel have chosen, his I will be, and with him I will
remain. 19 "Besides, whom should I
serve? Should I not serve in the presence of his son? As I have served in your
father’s presence, so I will be in your presence.’”
I suppose that this section could
have been called something like “The Lord use Hushai” or Hushai is serving the
king, the real king.
Verse fifteen shows David’s heart as
a shepherd of his people because David decided to leave Jerusalem so that there
would not be a bloody coup and David cared about his people unlike
Absalom. There could be no winner in
this war for if Absalom won his father would have to be killed, and if David
won then his own son Absalom would have to be killed so no winner in this war.
This section is about the words that
Hushai said to Absalom in order to gain his confidence and they need to be
looked at carefully. Hushai first tells
Absalom “long live the king, long live the king, but he was referring to David
who was the king. The phrase in verse
eighteen again is referring to king David but Absalom in his pride thinks that
he is referring to him. Hushai was a man
sent by the Lord in order to frustrate Absalom and give him wrong counsel so
that he would be defeated by David’s army and that is what would happen. He was God’s man here.
This SD is the beginning of Dr.
Wiersbe’s eighth chapter of his commentary on 2Samuel and it is entitled
“David’s Bittersweet Victory.” There are
four main points to this chapter and each of them have to do with what David
experienced during those difficult days when there was civil war in
Jerusalem. Today’s SD is the first
sub-point under the first main point called “David’s throne was usurped.”
Spiritual
meaning for my life today: I have
been saying all along about these difficult chapters of David’s life that I can
see what it was that God called David a man after God’s heart, for in times of
crisis David’s light burned the brightest.
David’s examples to me and to all who go through times like this are a
great example and also a great comfort and so I am thankful for them and praise
the Lord that they are included in His Book.
My Steps of Faith for Today:
1.
Continue to learn and grow closer to the
Lord through the difficult times that we are going through, for during the hard
times one grows closer to being more like Jesus and Paul writes “in everything
give thanks for this is the will of Christ Jesus in your life.”
