SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Joab brings Absalom to the king

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2Samuel 14:28-33

Message of the verses:  “28 ¶  Now Absalom lived two full years in Jerusalem, and did not see the king’s face. 29  Then Absalom sent for Joab, to send him to the king, but he would not come to him. So he sent again a second time, but he would not come. 30  Therefore he said to his servants, "See, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there; go and set it on fire." So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire. 31  Then Joab arose, came to Absalom at his house and said to him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?" 32  Absalom answered Joab, "Behold, I sent for you, saying, ’Come here, that I may send you to the king, to say, "Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me still to be there."’ Now therefore, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him put me to death." 33  So when Joab came to the king and told him, he called for Absalom. Thus he came to the king and prostrated himself on his face to the ground before the king, and the king kissed Absalom.”

I suppose that the other times that I have read this portion of Scripture that I kind of felt sorry for Absalom not realizing that he was trying to take the throne away from his father David.  Joab was a key player in bringing back Absalom to Jerusalem and then he saw how the crowds were reacting to Absalom and probably did not want to interfere with what he saw Absalom doing so he stayed away from him for fear that he would get wrapped up in the plans that he could see Absalom doing.  Joab had to come to Absalom’s house when he set fire to his barley field and no one would accuse Joab of conspiring with Absalom for talking to him about setting fire to his field.

Absalom and David finally got together but as far as any repenting done by Absalom there is no evidence of that so the peace between the two was really not a lasting peace for soon Absalom would take over the kingdom, take his father’s crown and sleep with his father’s concubines and as Dr. Wiersbe’s puts it this would be David’s darkest hour.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I think that what I can learn from this passage is to be wiser when listening to people when it comes to seeing what they are up to.  Be more observant and not so trusting as I have been in the past.  This is a fault of mine that from time to time gets me in trouble. With that said I don’t want to become a person who does not trust anyone thinking that they are out to get me, but have a correct balance in all of this.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       Trust the Lord to give me great wisdom in dealing with people.
